Arsenal are ‘in talks’ with Athletic Bilbao over a possible free transfer for Fernando Amorebieta, according to the player’s agent.
The 27-year-old will not sign an extension with the La Liga club and is set to depart the San Mames at the end of the current campaign because of it.
Amorebieta’s agent, Gines Carvajal says there are a lot of options available for the defender to consider, but states his client wants to join a Premier League side and Arsenal could well be his chosen destination.
Carvajal said:
‘We are in talks with Arsenal, he could join them in June.
‘We have had some contact with Anzhi [Makhachkala], they were ready to make a good offer, but my client wants to play in England so the transfer to Russia was not possible.’
Since breaking through the Bilbao first-team in 2005, Amorebieta, who can operate both as a full-back or centre-back, has made a total of 233 appearances for the Basque club and has been capped eight times for Venezuela.
Known for his versatility, hard-tackling and position, Amorebieta would certainly offer us more options in defence and would be an astute signing for us this summer.

8 caps for Venezuela is not a lot, particularly for a nation that are South American also-rans.

He only recently agreed to play for them. Was eligible for Spain, but obviously faced strong competition from Pique, Puyol, Ramos etc.
Would be a coup on a free transfer. Much tougher proposition for strikers than either Vermaelen or Mertesacker. While he’s bound to pick up bookings more frequently, it’d be refreshing to have a beast in defence rather than the fairies Vermaelen and Mertesacker have become.
They might be struggling in La Liga, but i’d welcome pretty much any starting player from Athletic Bilbao.
In fact, shopping in Spain with whatever our supposed transfer budget is, would be very wise. Some great talent available at reasonable prices, and far better success rate than players from France recently.

He couldnt do any worse than our current defenders surely although the wheels appear to have fallen off the bilbao wagon in the last year or so both defensively and offensively

Who?
There are more important problems than defence at the moment.
Are attack is so underperforming it is terrible.

He’s not very good. A cheapo option that would be good for a club like West Brom. Not good enough for the Arsenal.

I`m a firm believer that when players join the English Premier League they shoud adopt an English stage name for the duration. This would make them more acceptable to the fans and make the TV commentators job a lot easier. At the moment you have to be able to recognise and pronounce names from at least four or five different nations just enjoy your football.

Amo is another Pascal Cygan, fairly slow and would be killed in the PL look at howmany goals Bilbao conceeds it is grim reading but then again he is cheap, cheap as Wenger.
