Should this man aim to become Arsenal’s new Alex Song?

|

Aaron RamseyWe have reached that point of the season where player performances are looked at very closely. One player in particular that I have paid a little more attention to in the past few weeks is Aaron Ramsey.

Before his horrific injury, the Wales international was on course to be a better player than Jack Wilshere. Since then, his performances in the wide right and attacking midfield positions have fallen short of what is desired at times.

As a result, fans were left frustrated with the Welshman’s displays – myself included. But looking at our last four games or so, in which Ramsey’s taken up what appears to be a defensive midfield role, I think he may have finally found his calling in the side. Sure he may not have the strength to win balls, but his ability to read play, tenacity and determination are a vital set of traits for that particular role. He may not be as good as we’d like but some of his recent performances in the DM position are showing signs of improvement. Considering his age, he can only get better, but only if he continues to play week in, week out. So I suggest he keeps playing in this position.

It would be good to see another defensive midfielder come in in the summer, even though we have Abou Diaby back. But let’s face it – he can barely put a decent run of games together considering he picks up injuries like no mans business.

I am a fan of Ramsey and to be honest I’d like to see him progress in that new role that Arsene Wenger has put him in, especially if he continues to impress. So I say get him on the training ground and work on the areas of his game that he is lacking in.

It would be considerably cheaper for us in the long-term and give him more of a chance to be a permanent fixture in the side.

Only time will tell if he will be successful in his new role.

How you can write this article without even mentioning Arteta?

  • ivorstephens says:

Arteta isn’t a defensive midfielder hes of more use further forward as an alternative to cazorla and wilshere.Having committed ourselves to ramsey we must find a role for him.I didnt think much of his efforts against liverpool and i didnt see any of the stoke game so if his long term future is as a holding midfielder then he must apply himself to learning the particular skills of the position

  • Geod says:

    Better than Wilshere?????????

Let me explain to you that an injury cannot make you to lose the talent, you saw that with Wilshere also…

  • Jemes says:

First thing, Arteta is a deep lying playmaker which doesn’t mean he is a defensive mid. Ramsey holds the ball up we’ll if he is going to be our new DM he needs to improve on his heading and be stronger on the ball. COYG!!!

  • Ferro says:

Before Wenger put Ramsey in the holding role i heard one or two people mention this as an option, i were sceptic… but after seeing and thinking more on it i believe he could be very useful in this area. Ramsey never shirks a challenge and his stamina and work rate are top drawer, he is always getting in opponents faces… if he could add a sliding tackle to his game i would have no qualms whatsoever. Having a capable holding player who can pass the ball skillfully is the way forward.

@Geod, Wilsheres injury were mysterious fractures … Ramsey had two bones completely snapped with nothing but skin and arteries holding on his lower leg. Ramsey deserves praise from coming back from a career ending challenge, not comparisons with a player who gained his injury through exhaustion and niggles from lack of rest.

    • Ramsey in the kitchen says:

Good points. Also I think Ramsey has a good point to grow from playing in the more aggressive role of DM, where he will feel less of a target.Running from deep he could also prove a bit of a secret weapon in attack. At the very least he will prove to be good cover in the DM position.

    • bergkamps other leg says:

Ramsey was definitely playing a blinder before his ‘assault’ by the head orc. i think people should give the lad a bit of slack. I definitely think he is on his way back to somewhere near the player he was before.that and the amount of abuse he has received and still goes out and runs and runs and runs and gives it all. totally think with a bit of specialized coaching from bouldy can do a great job in that CDM position.

  • tommyt says:

He also needs to improve on his long ball. Other than that, the hold up play and header winning is a must for a decent dm. Tackling and marking are not an issue for him which is good and he has a decent head on him for reading play. Last ditch tackles and man marking are the geezer beyond him’s job which is a relief because it looks like there is one little aspect to do with confidence in heavy challenges that the scum Shawcross has taken from him for ever.

  • warui says:

Probably also Francis Coquelin …along the way

  • WC says:

Ramsey can’t pick out a pass like Song could for RVP. Ramsey in general is just average at best, perhaps his injury has turned him into a Torres in which case he won’t come good again and given the past 2 years it’s hard to argue against that. We need a much better player to put in that DM position because Ramsey’s just not that good and Diaby isn’t really either plus he can’t even finish all the games in any given month.

    • Zaidovski says:

      Well said.
Ramsey is never and will never be arsenal quality.
Stop allowing average players to take the position of real quality we can use !

    • haroon says:

Avg at best is a harsh comment. I want to ask how many years it took Song before he started to play well. Yes Ramsey does not have the assists that Song used to get but Ramsey has alot that Song never had too. How many goals woukd song get for us and was songs engine as good as Ramseys? Ramsey used to score the occassional goal but since his injury his shooting has never been what it was. People can not ignore his injury. It was a horific double fracture. He has continued to be played out of position. He will get back to what he was before and I hope will be as good as we hoped he would be when we signed him. We gave Bentner Eboue Diaby Almunia several years. We should be more patient with this lad, i believe he will come good.

  • jd says:

maybe we can give ramsey a chance to shine on the new position..if he was not the best player to play front..so why not switch him to back..maybe he can adapt the new role..but AW should train him more for the new role..for coquelin he should be loan out to gain more experience to strengthen his role..but for me,we should add DM,DC,FC next season and my suggestion are FW-villa,jovetic or ledwanski..Midfield-modric,strootman,wenyema …Defence-sakho,hummel,capoue…juz my opinion

  • Manix says:

Ramsey should first be informed that he IS allowed to pass the ball forward in football. Sorry but he completely slows down the game and never looks put the team in an attacking situation.

    • Zaidovski says:

Ramsey and those who support him are the reason we will never be a quality side.
No club will ever want or ask for such flops.
      Yet Arsene buys them.
He’s welsh. He broke a leg. So what!?
      Sh*t happens !!
Stop using that as justification to over shadow his useless pathetic quality we all hate.

He must be sold or hopefully seriously injured again.

      Lets pray !!

      • Goonerboyo says:

        Zaidovski
You come up with this obnoxious hate filled drivel in a number of places.
Ramsey is a quality player and never fails for want of effort. To be so abusive and to wish further serious injury on him tells us all more what sort of person you are than what yoy know about football, and frankly you are not up to the standard required of true Arsenal fans.
        Go and support Tottenham
