According to TribalFootball.com, Arsenal are keeping tabs on Sporting Gijon’s Borja Lopez Menendez, with Gunners chief scout Steve Rowley said t have made personal checks on the young Spaniard this season.
Despite recently signing a new deal at the Segunda Division club until 2017, interested clubs, which reportedly include Manchester United and Manchester City, will be allowed to speak to the 19-year-old defender and his representatives if his £4.5 million buyout clause is met.
Known for his pace, positional awareness, versatility and tenacity, Menendez has made a total of 13 appearances in all competitions for Sporting Gijon so far this season and has received eight yellow cards along the way.
Arsene Wenger is renowned for signing promising talent and if indeed he has sent scouts to watch Menendez, as TF.com suggests, then the Frenchman could well look into the possibility of matching the youngster’s buyout clause when the summer transfer window opens.
I expect this rumour to amount to nothing though.
