FIVE players Arsenal should have signed BEFORE they rose to stardom

|

Joe Hart

Shrewsbury Town to Manchester City for an initial £600,000 fee, rising to £1,500,000 if undisclosed clauses were achieved

Obviously a complete bargain. England’s first-choice goalkeeper, Hart is only 25 and when he made the move to City, he was only 18! In the time he has been at City, in the 2010–11 season, he won the Barclays Golden Glove for keeping the most clean sheets throughout the Premier League season. Hart replicated this feat again last season and was a key Manchester City player during their Premier League title winning year. Definitely a bargain-buy we missed out on.

Gregory van der Wiel

Ajax to PSG for €6 million

At 25, Van der Wiel hasn’t scored many goals, but has won the Johan Cruyff Award for ‘Young Player of the Year’ in the Netherlands.

He has also has been capped for Holland a number of occasions, playing in both the European and World Cup sides.

Even though we have Bacary Sagna, I believe Van der Wiel would have been a great understudy to the Frenchman and could have solved a lot of issues when Sagna was injured.

Scott Parker

West ham to Tottenham for £5.5 million

At the oldest player in the list at 30, Scott Parker is a hard tackler with a great reading of the game. He gets stuck in, keeps thing neat and tidy in midfield and can distribute the ball around really well. He would have also given Arsenal great experience in the middle of the park allowing Jack Wilshere to flourish (not that he isn’t already).

At the end of the 2003-04 season, Parker was named as the PFA Young Player of the Year. Following his performances for West Ham and England, Parker was placed on the six-man shortlist for the prestigious PFA Player of the Year Award. He missed out on the PFA award but was named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for his impressive displays for The Hammers.

Van der Wiel has been terrible for a couple of years now. Would rather have Carl Jenkinson as backup rb than him. Darjo Srna or Yuto Nagatomo are the calibre of players that should be taking over from Sagna.

Scott Parker would have been an underwhelming signing. Like most English players, very overrated and not cut out for top level football.

Agree with the others, but not convinced we’d have seen the same Cristiano Ronaldo here. Skillful youngster, but would never have expected him to become the great player he is.

I should have listened at school and gone on to be a doctor or a rocket scientist. You cant expect Arsenal to buy every young player of promise.Instead of wondering about who might have been a great signing, why not just back the players we do have, especially as our season enters its defining phase
