Ajax star rejects new deal, time for Arsenal to pounce?

|

Christian EriksenSo it seems Christian Eriksen does NOT want to sign a new deal at Ajax, as he and his agent want to see what opportunities arise during the summer. These are the words of former Gunner and current Ajax technical director Marc Overmars, which should have put Arsene Wenger on red alert.

Overmars said:

‘Christian has informed us that he doesn’t want to sign a new contract right now.

‘I think he and his agent want to see what opportunities present themselves this summer.

‘We want him to stay here for at least two more years but the day he leaves us he will be ready to play for the very best.

‘He’s a player even the biggest clubs in the world could do with having in their squad.’

The 21-year-old Dane is arguably one of Europe’s hottest properties and has been tracked by a number of clubs in the past, including The Gunners, and it now appears the time is right for Wenger and co. to make a swoop for the want-away playmaker at the end of the season.

Despite the signing of Santi Cazorla last summer, Wenger would be foolish not to make Eriksen one of his top priorities in the next transfer window.

Eriksen, whose contract expires in 2014, has superb technical ability, skill and composure on the ball – he would certainly fit the bill at Arsenal and offer us more options, something we could do with if we are to challenge for trophies next season.

Would Ajax sell him to us? I believe so. In fact, I think we would be frontrunners for his signature thanks to out Arsenal ties at the Dutch club – surely Dennis Bergkamp and Overmas would convince the Denmark international to join our club over the others.

Eriksen has contributed seven goals and four assists in 16 appearances in all competitions so far this season for the Eredivisie side.

One word gentlemen, one word: Money. Either that to sign him or money to sign other big players. Remember the days when players wanted to come to us? Yes, we had Bergkamp, Vieira, Henry, Pires, Ljungberg and then we had Edu, and others who can come off the bench and score a winner at Old Trafford. What do we have now in comparison?
