Will he be an ‘impossible act to follow’ as Dein states?

David Dein says Arsene Wenger will be an ‘impossible act to follow’.

But is the former Arsenal vice-chairman right?

The Frenchman has failed to win any silverware for the club since 2005, with some of the Arsenal faithful growing restless and believing his time is coming to an end at The Emirates helm.

However, Dein insists Wenger deserves nothing but praise for the job he has done since his arrival in 1996:

‘One should never, ever forget what he has done for the club.

‘He has absolutely transformed the club. The fact there is a magnificent state of the art training ground, the fact the stadium is virtually paid for.’

He added:

‘He has got a good squad. Obviously it has to be a squad that is capable of winning trophies, and that is something he is going to be working on, I know, but it is not easy.

‘But he has done a phenomenal job for the club. He is not going to be a difficult act to follow – he is going to be an impossible act to follow.’

Dein couldn’t be more right – Wenger has done a great job in transforming our club, from its style of play, to the new stadium and training facilities. He has made history with the club, building and managing the ‘Invincibles’ to of course moving us from Highbury to The Emirates Stadium. For these reasons, the Frenchman has already earned the status of ‘icon’.

However, we can’t live in the past.

As fans we want to see our club progress in the right way and challenge for silverware, but we aren’t seeing this. Unfortunately, expectations have dropped and it’s become more of a business than a football club – all about making profits and what the fans want.

Would Wenger be an ‘impossible act to follow’ as Dein states?

I think Arsenal fans are more worried about what will happen when he does leave – scared of the unknown. This is understandable. However, the majority of us were saying the same thing when George Graham departed the club. When Wenger was appointed as manager we didn’t know who the hell he was, did we? Eventually he will have to go as well. Nothing lasts forever. So we shouldn’t be too worried about it occurring.

There are good managers out there who can take the club forward once Wenger does decide to throw in the towel.

Dein knows more about running football clubs and management than you do.

If he says that Wenger is an impossible act to follow and you disagree then there is a 99% chance that you are wrong. It will not change anything if you get 2 million people who know nothing to agree that.

    Very arrogant article.

Please explain why you think Arsenal is the only club in the whole world who could not find another Manager ???

I will ask you when Wenger will leave this club What would we do??? sit and cry because one is left us!!!! Every journy has an end even though for manager but question is can he follow the time?? Today is not 1996 today is 2013 nowadays if you are behind and do not run then you are a loser, Football world has been changed if you think you can do it without spend money then you are deluded, same our good old Wenger when Mnu win every year he think about financial fair play, Instead of over paying average player he can be fair to give them what they are worth for. Look at Dothmond they were went down but where are they now with all this young player and we started before them how many top young player have we now??? What i want to say we should not be afraid if Wenger leave us with that money they pay him we can have 2 or 3 manager at the same time.

I would say that unless a great manager comes in and is given money to spend then we would be no better off, or most likely worse than we are now. The only clubs that have overtaken us in the wenger era have had to spend an absolute fortune to get there. The main problem in recent years is the other smallet clubs catching us up (everton and those wank’rs down the road) We dont spend big yet are always in contention, I start each season with anticipation and optimism hoping that it will be our year, this hasn’t come into fruition but I am not ready to turn my back on wenger. If all clubs were run like arsenal, football would be the better for it.

I agree Wenger will be an impossible act to follow, building a new stadium, training ground etc etc. Maybe we haven’t won no trophies recently but he kept the club at a respectable level (CL) working on small budgets. But now everything is apparently paid for it’s only a matter of time to see if Wenger does actually spend big!

For the next manager they will have it easy, no debts, new stadium and a lot of good young players coming through the academy. We won’t have to look at building a new stadium for another 100 years or so, during that time we probably could add another 10,000 seats to the stadium.

Absolute true Dien. Cos i dnt think any manager will come to build a stadium and work with low budget.. But we also need to strengten the squad in some areas.

Just put “Gunnersphere” on my list of unwanted sites. Not because I don’t tolerate dissent but because this site seems to now join those intent on destablishing Arsenal rather than providing positive assistance, albeit in a seemingly more sophisticated way. Despite what you may say, I believe you either don’t have Arsenal’s interest at heart or you don’t have the capacity to know what you are about.

    Very well said by TT.

Dein is right. The important thing to remember is that Wenger has set up a system that is easy to maintain. It is not Wenger that has not won silverware, it is the FA and its officials that have made it impossible to achieve a fair competition.

What Arsenal has is the envy of every football club in the world. No other club has financial stability with a quality team, fans that are incredibly supportive, infrastructure good for decades and a history within the beautiful game.

    • Chris says:

No … Not the FA. It is Arsene who accepts nil advice. And has bought some wrong players / played good players out of position till they are ruined / concentrated on attack at the expense of defence / has had only one way of playing so that every other team knows how to play against us. In short he has always been an excellent Director of Football (who inherited the old George Graham back 4) posing in a coach’s clothing.

      • allan1340 says:

Truthi am completely agree with you. So many players he bought and they scored goals then he replace them and distroyed them and he still does it even they cry for thier right position like Arshavi or Chamak after Robin come back he did not used that poor guy then fans blame Chamak even the best player if you do not use them often will go out of tun, If we say they are not good then question is why we bought them same that poor Koreian. Wenger has been lot of mistake we can not just close our eyes and say every thing is perfect there is not such a things in this world.

  • albie says:

I’m not surprised that Dein is backing Wenger. All our best players left because of Deins’ son who happens to be an agent. Surmise what you think from that. I am not convinced that this season will end with a trophy. Last night was luck and Swansea have other things on their minds.
Brighton is not going to be easy, so its about time new players were bought before it all ends in shame.

  • urch says:

He has done it all in Arsenal (Arsene). He has signed world class players in the past. In the days old, when Arsenal was still playing in Highbury, he signs players that will immediately replace a departing players. He signed Anelka to replace Ian wright. He signed Henry to replace Anelka. He signed Wiltod and Pires to replace Overmars. He signed so many great players to replace many departing great players. Arsenal’s need to be managed prudently, more especially this period of time that we moved to the magnificent Ash Burton glove. We need not spend like chelsea, man city. Real madrid, man utd and Barcelona, juve, bayern, milanese clubs have financial resources that ????????????? traditionally rooted. We want to follow the steps of those clubs because they survive by what they earn. We Arsenal Fans shouldn’t be looking at City Ø??? chelsea; they ????????????? envious of our achievements. If wenger start signing world class players as he used to, no club and I mean, no club can match our pattern of play. What we should pray for is for the moment to come. And I believe that as D????? debt associated to Ash burton construction is being coming to being off set, wenger will resort to signing classy players. Ferguson don’t sign well known players more than wenger and we all ????????????? aware of that. Cavani is on the way of becoming an arsenal player (wishful).

  • Jemes says:

Lol I’d take Dein as our signing of the window !
