According to several reports, Arsene Wenger is finally ready to spend big – yes you read correctly, big! And says the club are in the market this month to bolster and strengthen the current squad. But haven’t we heard this all before?
The Frenchman said:
‘My plan is to keep all of the players we have and then to add maybe, if possible, two new players to the squad. We will spend big (again) because we had restricted finances because we had built the stadium and had to pay that back.
‘You look at any club who has done that, and they have gone down (in performance).
‘We stayed at the top level, yes without winning the Premier League, but we were always at the top level. Now we have come out in a much stronger position financial again, so we can spend.
‘But our way is a bit like Barcelona as well, to produce the core of the team from inside and add from outside the players who give really a plus.’
This is indeed great news to hear as an Arsenal fan. The stadium is finally paid off and funds, as we knew before the New Year turned, were available (about £70 millions worth, according to Ivan Gazidis).
However, will Wenger actually do as he promised and spend big?
Can you honestly see Le Boss splashing out big bucks for a player? Or is he once again having us on and just sign mediocre players or none at all?
To be honest, I can’t see Mr. Wenger spend ‘big’ – it’s not in his nature too. Even if the board have given him a substantial warchest to utilize, why hasn’t he done it already, or in the past even?
We definitely need some new blood to come in this month, preferably a holding midfielder, and of course he has to be a top player, one that would suit our style of play.
Hopefully Wenger stays true to his word, spends big, and acquires the necessities over the next 15 days. If he doesn’t then he’s played us all for fools like he always does during the transfer window periods.

He will certainly not spent big, Wenger is a master of psychological games. It will be great if he buys real quality and not his last minute bargains that are mostly mediocre. He must stop being too economical with cash

Most times I find your columns reasonable and worth a read. This time your title condemns you to being the “fool”! By what measure can you even expect the idea of “truth” to be adhered to in this age of tabloid journalism, beying hordes, and the cut-throat environment of football transfers? Or, are you beginning to believe in every groundless rumour, perhaps even including your very own? Mostly gunnersphere, you are better than this.

Gazidis DID NOT SAY we have 70 million available! He said we have funds to spend, and others speculated it was 70 million. Be careful what you say as this sort of thing just riles up the morons who buy the Sun, believe the lies the journalists spout and get wound up when we dont spend money that we donthave

I’m confused, we only buy mediocre cheap players?… What were cazorla, podolski and giroud? All three are quality and none of them were cheap.
What do people expect? Us to spend £80 mill on one player? Or even £40? Yes, spending £20-25 million is a reasonable expectation, but who is available to us?
Wenger has said before that Jan is not the best time to buy players and he’s right, because clubs do not want to lose their best players halfway through the season when it will be v difficult to bring in replacements.
Does anyone really want us to waste money on overpriced average players that we will have to continue paying for for years to come?

Dear Jack u Are right we used lot of money for bring this player to our squad, but the question is how many of them are good enough for us and if they are why we can not have consistancy in our team??? To buy expensive players is not always right answer, but what we bought are really the answer for over problem then why we are so shaky. I will not judge them but if you can not use them i right position or play them week in and week out and miss place them from thier natural place then u can not use the in right way. Or they sit on bench because Theo will play at center. or Rambo instead of Rocisky. U mention only one club w which want our Rambo only one club??? Then we make long term contract with him. This is a football club not a charity. We can not say we do not have money and make contract with player who are out of tun like many of our deadwood this is not good bussines.I think so.But my problem is not a our team my problem is Wenger. He is the manager and he has no clud whatsoever. just listen to his comments.

U are all deluded, why in the earth do u believe in this joker. He had all time he needed in summer but he hoped Diyabi man come out of his hat and make miracle. Miracles time is over we are living in 21th of century Mr. Wenger, your time is already is runing up. Wenger and team are same a man who hit by the car but still feel warm and do not know what the hell has happend. I wish we buy big player but for years this club suffering from bad managment and even you brought best player he will miss place them or set them on bench to please Theo like what he does know and our defender they talk for them self. Good luck for tonights game i hope we at least win this one.If some fans are not happy for this comment then i hope they are right and i am wrong, but the question is am i wrong????

There was a time, not so long ago, that I would give Wenger the benefit of the doubt and trust to his better judgement…..not any more.
