Spending £7.5M on this man would be ideal, but would it solve anything?

|

I read on Tuesday, in The Sun newspaper, that Arsenal will look to trigger a £7.5 million buyout clause in order to acquire Newcastle’s Demba Ba.

But would signing the Senegalese forward solve Arsenal’s apparent problems?

You don’t have to have an IQ of 140, let alone 70 or under, to know Arsene Wenger is seeking the services of a top striker after losing Robin van Persie to Manchester United in the summer. But while many of you reading this may believe the answer to our current problem(s) is to bring a lethal striker, some may think the team needs an injection of creativity and solidarity instead.

Ba’s buyout clause is set to re-activate next month and Wenger is reportedly keen to snap him up for the reported fee.

But a source, quoted in The Sun a few days ago, reckons the 27-year-old wants to stay with the Toon army:

‘Demba wants to be paid what he thinks he deserves but remains committed to the club. He loves it at Newcastle and wants it to be sorted out as soon as possible.’

The Senegal international has one-year left on his existing deal at Newcastle, with the Tyneside club looking to tie him down to a new deal with no buyout clause in it.

Undoubtedly, Ba would be a good acquisition for the club and for £7.5 million you can’t really go wrong.

However, I don’t think his potential arrival would solve anything. To be honest we have enough strikers in our squad, but many of them are being played out of position, and I think Ba coming in would unsettle Olivier Giroud, who has done well since his summer arrival from Montpellier.

Creativity and solidarity at the back is what we lack, not goals. We have players all over the pitch who can get their name on the score-sheet, but not may who can create chances – this is what the problem is at Arsenal.

Hopefully Wenger has realised this and will act on it this January, otherwise it could be a very long Winter and Spring ahead.

  • in fact, this write up is nonsense to me. Arse Wenger get Demba for the fans. Who is oliver compared to Demba present form. We all know we have problem in the defence but we are not shooting it right. Dont be deceived. The writer of this article is a distraction to arsenal. Take note.

If – and it is a big if – Ba decided to leave Toon then he would cost rather more than £7.5m. If it was as simple as handing over that figure then would Arsenal really be alone in making the offer. It would become a bidding war and we all know Ba is worth much much more than £7.5m. Just saying ……

Unsettle Giroud?…u r totally wrong, it’s a competitive world and we have to fight for our places. In my opinion, Ba is one of the best strikers in the prem league. Let’s get rid of chamakh.

I simply don’t agree with you writer, Ba is a proven premiership goal getter even with coming on as a sub he still gat moree goals compared to olivier Giroud he plays in almost all our games. Our problem is ” Our players are too sluggish upfront and afriad to take the challenge of shooting” we play fancy football, win all the possession and yet have just 5 shot on goal (against Norwich). I think that’s nonsense. We need Ba and maybe Wayama.

Arsenal needs a Holding Mid-Fielder and a Striker. Maybe Ba can fill the Striker role, but to me he seems a bit too similar to Giroud. But, the price is right and he is proven in the Prem.

Without a HMF, we are not going anywhere, so regardless of the striker situation HMF is a priority.

That should fix the immediate problem and get us contending for 4th place. But, if we want to stand a chance of actually winning something we will need a Keeper, a Left-Back, an Attacking Midfielder and a competent back-up to TVM, Koz, Mert.

i agree with most of the comments here,ba will be an advantage to give proper compotion gervino-walcott a not so good winger we need proper compotion with ba and hunteler both being good options, but ideally we need capone-biglia or mvila in our d/m role arteta as good as hes been playing just isnt a holding def/midfield.

Demba ba is not a bad player but I dont think that he’s any better than what we have.If the thinking is that he’s value for money at£7.5m then why not buy Huntelaar, who wont fail a medical and who has a far better goalscoring record.Anyway unless ba can play as a defensive midfielder then he should not be priority. This January should be about getting rid of the Arshavins and Djourous and such like in order to free up some money for next summers arrivals

  • the king says:

    his no better then Giroud.
Giroud would be perfect as a sub to come on in games.
if we had one other world class striker someone like lorient and Giroud as back up it would fix aot of probles……

but ofc wenger will get the cheap options in huntaler or ba both round 7M.

    • ivorstephens says:

Llorente is hardly a goal machine and there are plenty of goals in the arsenal if they get the midfield dynamic right

  • WC says:

Can’t be worse than Chamakh and Gervinho

    • ivorstephens says:

Here’s the thing, there is no point in spending between 5 and10 million pounds on players only to be getting rid of them after 1 or 2 seasons. That suggests that the identification of transfers is not thorough enough. As regards Chamakh,I’d send him out on loan to gain some matchtime and confidence,as at least he has shown an ability to score at some point in his arsenal career. He was a little unlucky to have Van Persie to compete with as Jesus Christ himself would have had to play second fiddle to the Dutchman
