A bold statement which may divide fans further

|

We’ve had a somewhat indifferent start to our campaign this year. Still in all competitions, but our performances have swung like a pendulum from excellent to absolute rubbish.

One clear effect some of the poor performances have had on us can be seen in the league. We find ourselves 10th. The highlight of the lows, a humiliating 2-0 defeat at home at the hands of Swansea. That result gave the boo boys a platform to air their frustrations once again as they continue to grow restless at the worrying signs in the club’s current form, with some unhappy about the lack of investment in the first-team. To be honest, quite a number of us fall in this bracket.

Going through my timeline on Twitter, I’m seeing civil wars between fellow Gooners emerging. Some fans still see Arsene Wenger as the man for the job, while others want his head on a silver platter. And former Gunner Stewart Robson falls into the latter camp.

He recently told talkSPORT:

‘I would have sacked him four years ago but I’m in the minority.

‘Arsenal football club need a new manager and they need it soon.’

I think it’s about time we all just came out and said it – Wenger has come to the end of his reign. I can say I’m with the idea of sacking the Frenchman. I just can’t keep the faith in him any further. He’s been unable to hold onto important key players over the years with Theo Walcott most likely to be the next escapee. In addition, his tactics as of late have been questionable, and he seems lost with no idea of what to do next.

Take nothing away from what he’s achieved and done for us over the years, but even the greatest rulers have to step down and let someone else have a go at some stage.

But it seems no matter how much we argue over this the Arsenal board seem very content with what’s happened over the years. It’s like Wenger is unsackable. Virtually untouchable in a sense.

Sorry but this ‘article’ is an absolute joke and devoid of any intelligence whatsoever.

    • Taaza says:

i take it you are one of those who seem pleased with what the club has accomplished recently.

      • ken lo says:

I take it you are one our newly found “supporters” who, unless we win something start booing the players and wear backscarfs?
What was the point of this article and who the hell are you anyway?
We need REAL supporters who are positive through thick and thin…do you fit the bill?

        • chris from Cambridge says:

          It’s only been thin.

been there for a while mate. love the club, its the man leading us i’ve grown sick and tired of. We’ve gotten worse as the years have gone by. Why defend him when you know he’s messing up… what?? real supporters aren’t allowed to express their negative views. Sorry ken lo, not as blind as you are. unlike you. most people can tell when something isn’t right, and when it isn’t you express your anger towards it so the right people get the message.

  • mint says:

Sack the board not the manager just yet. We need to get rid of Kronke, Gazidis & the rest of his stooges and get David Dein back in lively

    Up the Arsenal

  • Lobster says:

I still believe in wenger, I still believe he can build another great Arsenal team, we were hella close 2 seasons ago.. Thinking about some of the football we played back then(when cesc was fit ofcourse) makes me realise how overrated this barcelona team of bullies nd ref cons is.

  • Jed says:

@Arthur Pendle. It’s your comment that is devoid of all intelligence. If you think AW can turn it around then tell us how and why. Slinging insults is pointless.

@mint. It is not possible to sack the owner, the board or the CEO. The only hope of change is to press for Wenger to go.

I agree 100% with Taaza that he’s had his day and should step aside. He shows us week in week out that he can’t get performances from the players. His organisation is weak and his tactics non-existent. It’s sad but reality has to be faced.

    • ken lo says:

      “Week in week out?
      Man City away…Liverpool away…S***s at home…Everton away…(Utd lost there remember?)…Southampton home…West ham away…knockout stages of the C.L…last eight of the cup…
Yes we have had some awful results as well, but why do you doom and gloom merchants always conveniently forget things that dont support your arguments?
Grow some and argue costructivally, then it might be interesting!!!!

      • Jed says:

I am looking at the big picture, overall this is Wenger’s worst start by a long way. We’ve had a few good results and a lot of poor ones. It’s always a difficult moment recognising when the interests of the club are best served by changing the manager. Now is that time for AFC, in my view.

  • Enkuneh says:

Wenger is a dead lion. atleast an alive dog is better than that though
No body will prove me wrong cause his team will start to slip as time pass though season and won’t be champion even having mesy.

  • Stuart says:

A simple fact is recently at the AGM Gazidis stated rather quietly that Wenger had been given money but chose not to spend it. That I think is teh first crack between him and the board. Wenger still wants to do it his way but that is now out of date and he is being left behind by other managers. His teams selections are poor, his tactics are poor, the 433 formation was introduced for Cesc. He has gone and we still persist the same way. That says it all, he will not change. It is time for Wenger to go.

    • GoonerDave says:

Not that simple Stuart – I didnt hear him say that, what did Gazidis say?

    • Jed says:

The impression I have (just a gut feel) is that Gazidis sees that Wenger’s reign is coming to a close. Fans need to stop knocking Gazidis and start seeing him as an ally in getting the real culprit – the manager – to resign.

      • GoonerDave says:

You do not know who the main culprit is.
A gut feel is all you have, yet you would gamble the future of our club on that?

        • Jed says:

You’ve not answered the point about what we are seeing on the pitch. It’s getting worse as the seasons go by, isn’t it?

For the wage Wenger is drawing we could replace him with a very good substitute. Any change is risky but you can control the risk by choosing a good replacement.

    • chris from Cambridge says:

The first crack was when Gazidis met with the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust. He then let slip that the ‘Flat Wage Structure’ (which pre dated both Kroenke and Gazidis) was put in place by the then Directors – after much persuasion – to suit Wenger(!) It has been a complete disaster and still is. A big example of Wenger enjoying too much power when he should have been sticking to his own area of expertise.

  • David says:

Wenger has rubber stamped every player through the door and their is alot of poor ones. He inherited one of the best back 4/5’s the premiership has ever seen. His tactics void of any engery, tackling or spark. His subsitutions are even worse. No decent player wants to stay at our club anymore. He has got to go !!!!

    • ken lo says:

Szcz, sagna, Per, Verm, Kosc, Gibbs, Arteta, Wilshere, Podolski, Giroud, Ox, Cazorla all “decent”!!! players with long term contracts.
The unbeatables were his back four, Adams and co nnever did that did they?
Reading 7-5…Spuds 5-2 (as examples) not showing any spark, energy or tackling?
He rubber stamped every signing? Yes like Henry, Vieria, Campbell, Anelka, Llunberg, Petit, Na$$ri, Fabregas, van Pursy…so again you only remember the bad ones?
Just like Jed, you always convenientally forget the facts that do not support you comments?
Grow some and support you club for christ sake or just go to Chelsky/Shitty and buy your history!!

    • chris from Cambridge says:

He did not rubber stamp them … he chose them.

  • GoonerDave says:

    Ridiculous.
We dont even know who to blame yet – is Wenger refusing to spend money, or are his hands tied financially?
We can all speculate, but we dont actually know the truth about this yet. And until we do, its pointless trying to blame anyone.
All our protests, all our anger, everything, should be aimed at seeking the truth of our finances.
Once we know the truth, we can play the blame game. If its Wenger refusing to spend, he must resign immediately. If not, he deserves a massive amount of gratitude.
In the meantime, lets get behind the squad and management.

    • Jed says:

Agreed with you so far as the finances are concerned – we just don’t know.

But when it comes to the stuff that doesn’t cost money – tactics, motivation, leadership, organisation – we can see with our own eyes that Wenger’s not delivering. The existing squad is plenty good enough to come 4th on paper, we need a new manager who can get the best from them.

      • GoonerDave says:

        Jed-
If Wenger is delivering top 4 year in year out, while operating with no transfer funds to speak of, then he is doing a remarkable job and it would be completely foolish to sack him.
But if he is refusing to spend, then he is personally accountable for the state of our squad.
Its vital to know the truth before sacking the manager.

        • Jed says:

He is personally accountable for performances on the pitch too, which are poor. The concern is that the team is declining year by year and if the decline continues at the current rate we won’t be top 4. I’ve changed my view on Wenger this season because I am looking ahead based on what we are now seeing. He has done a remarkable job but the signs are that the magic hat isn’t working any more.
