Arsenal are keen to land Ghanaian midfielder Afriyie Acquah, who has been labelled the new Michael Essien, in the winter transfer window, according to Ghana Web.

The Gunners were linked with a move for Essien in the summer, but the 30-year-old opted for a loan move to Real Madrid until the end of the season.

Arsene Wenger appears keen to sign a midfield enforcer in January as his current crop are mainly known for their creativity rather than tenacity.

Abou Diaby was seen, by many, as the long-term successor to Patrick Vieira, who left the club in 2005. But the lanky Frenchman has been plagued with injuries and is currently sidelined with another, while Francis Coquelin doesn’t look ready to fill the role just yet.

Ghana Web claims Wenger will send scouts to the African Cup of Nations to watch Acquah. The African website also believes Wenger is ready to spend €10 million to acquire the 20-year-old robust midfielder before the January transfer window shuts.

Known for his strength, tackling and tenacious play, Acquah, who is contracted to Palermo, is currently on a season-long loan at Parma.

Is not a QUICK ONE.. What about Frimpomg? We need a January aquisation eg GUSTAVO.

Frimpong ultimately wont make the grade like most Arsenal youngsters. It might be better to buy someone who can slot right in and help balance the team. Also I thought Id never say this but our improved play late in the game last night was down to rosicky being the link man

I’m starting to feel a bit sorry for Wenger the papers(even the guardian) are really getting on his back.I’d lay off him till after the transfer window closes. As regards Steve Bould he hardly went into the job with his eyes closed.Football clubs are small places he must have known the story.I wouldn’t overreact to Tuesday’s disappointment, galling as it was.The premier league is weak enough for us to still be in with a shout come easter provided our players behave like men and start taking responsibility for what happens out on the pitch. Managers and coaches can only do so much eventually in football as in life there needs to be some level of individual accountability.
