Would it be a step backward if this man did rejoin Arsenal?

An unprecedented third homecoming beckons for Arsenal icon Thierry Henry this January, and I personally want to see it happen (again)

And while the Arsenal faithful would love to see the legendary 35-year-old return home, Alan Smith believes Arsene Wenger will be making a big mistake signing the New York Red Bull striker on loan.

Despite Henry impressing during his loan stint last season where he managed to score two goals in six appearances for Arsenal, Smith reckons it would be a step backwards for the club.

The former Gunner now turned Sky Sports commentator, said:

‘I just think it’s a backward step if he did return.

‘Once is fine and great he got that goal against Leeds in the cup [last season] and one or two influential moments but that’s not enough.

‘Another year down the line…I just don’t see it. It seems as if it’s a retrograde step that Arsenal don’t need to be making at the moment.’

To a degree, I get where Smith is coming from – a short-term deal for Henry will not be solving the problem. However, it would certainly boost morale at the club, and he could offer advice to the new/younger players in the squad.

It may not be the wisest of moves to bring him back, but you can’t help but want it to happen, purely because of who the player is. And with Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh off to The African Cup of nations in January, a loan move for Thierry will at least offer cover for a while.

Enough of this idea of bringing back Henry please. Do our pains count at all in our darling team? If yes, then tell those concern that I and my kindred will like to see him take his seat by other legends and old pals like Sol in our games. I strongly believe that will do us more good than seeing him week-in week-out along side Giroud. If we need a striker then we go look for one in the market.

I would take the henry option as it will provide cover when we miss gervinho and chamakh in january. We still need a striker and an out and out winger that way we can throw walcott through the middle with giroud and revert to a 4 4 2 when things need changing or are not going our way.
