Andre Villas-Boas has somewhat stoked the flames ahead of the massive north London derby at The Emirates tomorrow afternoon, by claiming Tottenham are closing the gap on Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal.

Despite not lifting a trophy since 2008 and always finishing below The Gunners in the league – for as long as I can remember, Villas-Boas reckons that although Arsenal have accumulated more silverware over the years, Spurs are nearer to their rivals than they have ever been.

Quoted recently in The Sun, The former Chelsea boss said:

‘I think Arsenal at the moment have accumulated the most amount of trophies which is important.

‘That is including being the Premier League champions, which is a step up and where we want to be in the future.

‘I think recently they have obtained more Champions League qualifications and that is our objective for the season, too.

‘We are certainly getting nearer in terms of what we are doing for the club but the past shows they are more regular at obtaining those objectives.’

In a way, he does have a point to his statement.

In the past, Arsenal were always challenging for Premier League titles or lifting them. But since 2005 onwards we seem to have settled for a top four finish every season, like it is an achievement in itself – quite frankly, this is not good enough for a club of Arsenal’s stature and history.

It pains me to say it but in the past two seasons or so Tottenham have progressed as a team. There not better than us by any means, but they have stepped up in recent times while we have gone the other way.

It’s just a shame to think that we are fighting with the likes of Spurs for a Champions League qualification spot, when we should really be up there with the big boys battling it out for the title instead.
