So it seems that Arsenal and Tottenham target Jan Vertonghen has announced that he’s fully prepared to join the Gunners if Spurs cannot agree a deal – news that will both please and frustrate some Gooners.
It appears the deal is currently failing due to the agreement of the transfer fee, as Ajax are thought to want £12 million for the Belgium’s services, while Spurs are only prepared currently to pay £9 million.
Vertonghen recently said:
‘I’ve said repeatedly that Tottenham are my first choice, but the talks haven’t progressed.
‘They have shown me around, I have met all their key people and their chairman came to meet me on Monday. But Arsenal want me too. They remain a possibility if my Spurs move falls through, as Ajax are asking £12m for me.’
Now I am a bit p***ed off about this to be honest, either he wants to join us or he doesn’t, there seems to be one or two players currently (Eden Hazard) who think the whole transfer system is a joke, and they can just sit there and announce whatever they like to clubs.
Vertonghen is a very good player, there is no denying that, but I can’t help but think that his latest comments are somewhat of a slap in the face to Arsenal.
Obviously I am looking at this from a fans perspective, but I’d much prefer a player who wants to play for us as there first choice rather than ‘settling’ for us because his primary option fell through. Although I am sure that given the fact there have been moves like Sol Campbell to Arsenal from Tottenham, I would welcome him, assuming he was going to put in 100% and not just whine about how he didn’t get the move he wanted.
The 25-year-old centre-back is aware that matching Ajax’s demands could be difficult though:
‘That is a lot of money for someone with just a year left on his contract. I’m sure Spurs won’t be able to pay that much after they missed out on the Champions League.
‘Ajax want to get as much as they can for me, while Spurs want to pay as little as possible.
‘I hope a deal can be done. But I won’t fight with Ajax – that is the last thing I’d want after so many good years with them.’
I guess we will have to see what happens with Vertonghen in the upcoming weeks. I personally think that he will end up at Tottenham, but I wouldn’t turn him away from Arsenal as I think he would be a great signing for our club.

To your point I’d say; Spurs weren’t in the Champions League this year either, infact before 2010/2011 it had been some time since they had. Spurs aren’t a champions league side, there are 2 teams in London better than them… Nevermind the BPL.

No, we’ve never been interested and he’s trying to use our name to clinch the Spurs deal. He is a quality defender and would have been a good addition to the squad with his versatility, but he’s not going to displace Vermaelen and Koscielny has been immense recently. I’d rather a defender that’s capable at both centre back and right back, such as Yanga-Mbiwa, though it looks like he may be heading to the Bundesliga.

Yeah, finished above you, as always.
So jog on you mug.
Oh and btw, swanky stadiums and hi tech training facilities don’t win you games you retarded cockslap. A good team without bottlers and pretenders is what gets you a top 3 finish…. So you lot are fucked yet again.

We don’t need this one. Bartley is coming back and is worth a try, and with Per, Coz and Vermaelen plus Song at a push and Miquel we’ve got cover. We may still even have Djourou and Squillachi. We don’t need anyone who’d rather be a spud.
[Reply]
May 29th, 2012 at 6:58 pm
I wouldn’t listen to what the papers say. And if he was to go to the Spuds I’m sure he will eventually realise he’s made a mistake. And I’m sure he would prefer champions league football. Just wait and see what happens when the transfer window opens. He’s only got to look at the clubs records and see who the best choice would be. When did the Spuds win the league last. I even bet a few of the big names will leave Spurs as they want champions league not Europa. If it was true that Wenger offered £7 million that I could believe as he done it with Cahill and Bolton and eventually went to Chelski for £7 million lol.

Wenger copped a strop because the Bolton chairman went public with the negotiations … ie. Arsenal offering peanuts. That may have made Wenger feel good but has done Arsenal no good at all. Of course I would welcome him , does AW not have a back up plan if he can not sign M’Vila of course he has, so why should a player not have the same. He is a very good player and a professional so if he did sign I would expect to him to give a 100%.
We need an all rounder that can play in a number of positions across the back line/mid field as that is where the greats amount of injuries/problems has arisen, so I say go for him, not to just get one up on Spurs but because we need someone of this quality .

Over here where mature people analyse facts, rather than the infantile prejudiced , moronic kneejerk efforts,it’s quite clear to see the whole picture. the player wants to go to Tottenham, Ajax are asking an exorbitant fee for a player entering the final year of his contract and who can negotiate a free move in January. So the player makes it clear who he wants to play for. No other club will pay an exorbitant fee for a player who’s heart is elsewhere and the club is second/third choice. Clearly a player with a brain. No wonder the cretins on here can’t comprehend what am intelligent player is doing. So that’s it kiddies-must be approaching bed time if the comments reflect age or IQ.

He clearly wants to join Spurs because he has been used to being a big fish in a small pond and feels he will not be able to up his game enough to displace TV or LK. On top of that he probably is not even much better than Per meaning he would be competing with Johan on 4th choice CB where as he would walk in to the Spurs team and one of their big players.
You do worry when players want to join a team that plays less Champions League football than the team he is leaving.

The quote doesn’t bother me a bit. Obviously the Spurs have rolled out the red carpet for him. Besides, he plays for another club in another country. Would you welcome this man to Arsenal after his latest comments?
YES
When we beat AC Milan at Emirates, Jan Vertonghen was in the crowd and applauded our effort, our team, our new stadium and our club.
If you publicly announce your desire to join your 1st choice club and that club shows you little interest in giving you a contract, due to the fact that Arsenal believe they have enough 1st team defensive options, (hahaha), and that Arsenal believe that our 2 1st choice CBs are the best we could have, (hahaha), well then you look somewhere else and say other things to attract interest, don`t you?
I`ve followed Arsenal for 50yrs and followed Vertonghen for the last 3 seasons. I rate him higher than Thomas Vermaelen. They`re very similar players, but Vertonghen is bigger and slightly faster. But during his attempt to move to the FAPL, our club has shown next to no interest in attaining his services. Probably due to the 12m that Ajax want for him, and nothing more.

Look at it this way:
He can go to the team in 4th where he’ll be the top centre-back
Or he can go to the team in 3rd where he’ll either be backup centre-back or played out of position in DM…
He’s not a fan of either team and he’d probably get very similar wages from the two of them. It’s a no-brainer really isn’t it, especially if he feels he can help Spurs get CL football.

Your right Kenny mate. We made to many silly mistakes and if we have an injury we have crap for cover. Our defensive errors was our main problem this season. Winning games then throwing them away and to crap teams as well. I would start Vertonghen in Cb with Koschielny and put The terminator left back where he can play. Gibbs is to injury prone and Santos is good for cover. But I can understand a player going to the Spuds for regular football but Arsenal can offer him Champions league football. Spurs will lose big players this transfer window. Van Der Vart is going to Schalke according to sky sports today and Modric will go as well. Let’s hope Wenger gets his finger out of his back side and buy some big players.

Gunners should give Vertoghen a break. If he says that Tottenham is his first choice it is because thay are the ones that have shown great desire for him. He has made up his mind to leave Ajax and the club after his heart keeps stalling for God-knows-what-reason. If his fate lies solely with Arsenal, he would be doomed to more years of football with Ajax. Arsenal should stop this pretentious habit that has cost them too many quality players in recent times e.g. Juan Mata et al, all in a bid to get things on the cheap.

Does annoy me when Arsenal fans refer to Vertonghen’s comments about joining spurs over Arsenal as lacking in ambition. Firstly, I wonder if Arsenal fans would refer to RVP as unambitious should he choose to stay at Arsenal over any actual title contenders. Secondly, the gap between Arsenal and Tottenham is now minimal. You may have secured CL football this year but you have as much chance of winning it as we do. You also have little to no chance of winning the title. Therefore, Vertonghen has as much chance of winning something at spurs than Arsenal. Thirdly, the argument that he is joining us because he has more chance of getting into our team is laughable. Both teams have defensive issues represented in their goals against column which was appalling for both sides.
Arsenal fans are just struggle to come to terms with the fact that the choice between Arsenal and Spurs is no longer that obvious for players given the comparable squad quality and unlikelihood of both sides to be competing for titles next year.

arsenal fans, you must realise. that spurs have caught you, we play great football, better than you, we have a wonderful training complex, and a great atmospheric stadium on the way, and we run ourselves within our clubs means ,like yourselves, unlike them sugardaddy clubs, and YOU ONLY BEAT US BY ONE POINT, BECAUSE OF A DODGY KEEPER, remember that.
we chucked our points against you in the league, because of the f.a farce, and redknapps, indecision, at the time, and you know it.

He’s a Belgian, not a Belguim.
I don’t think he said it — you’d have to be an idiot to say it, or really poor in England talk. Is he such an unsophisticated professional that he would knowingly slight Arsenal?
Anyway, hasn’t he heard about the marvellous Arsenal annual holiday, St. Totteringham’s Day? How could he want to miss that?
