Podolski very keen on Gunners, says Mertesacker

|

Lukas Podolski is very interested in sealing a move to Arsenal this summer, according to Per Mertesacker, who has revealed the two have been in contact about life at The Emirates.

The Gunners have been linked with the FC Koln forward in recent months and are reportedly planning a summer bid for the 26-year-old, who is all but certain to leave the Bundesliga outfit.

Arsenal tried to sign the German international in January, but the north London club were told by Podolski’s agent that the player considered it too risky at the time.

However, the former Bayern Munich striker remains keen on a move to Arsenal and has been in touch with fellow countryman Mertesacker, who left Werder Bremen for the Gunners at the start of the current campaign.

Mertesacker told Sky Deutschland:

‘Lukas has shown a lot of interest in recent weeks and has sent me a text message.

‘As you can imagine, I’ve told him positive things.’

The German press suggested a couple of days ago that Podolski has already signed a pre-contract agreement with Arsene Wenger’s side, which is something Mertesacker is unaware of, yet states this proposed move can happen in the summer:

‘I haven’t been told that, and Lukas hasn’t called me. I have written to him, though, to tell him how well he can do here and what a great club it is. I think it can happen.’

Podolski, who has netted 16 goals in 20 games so far this season, is arguably becoming Arsenal’s number one priority this summer, and the Gunners could, if reports are indeed true, snap him up on the cheap if FC Koln are relegated due to a clause in his current contract.

he’d be a great signing. would show that we have intentions of challenging for silverware too. plus he may be the player that might persuade Van Persie to stay.
