Arsenal legend expects club to challenge next season

This is what I like to see, optimism from our legends.

Nigel Winterburn firmly believes Arsenal should be able to challenge for the title next year, if they are able to keep their star players, as well as add a few additions to the squad:

‘I expect them to be back up there at least challenging.

‘If you put yourself in that position then that is all you can ask. Eventually you get yourself over the line first and hopefully that will be sooner rather than later for Arsenal.

‘They have a good core of talent and if they can add one or two to it then I think they will be even stronger next season.’

I have to say that I agree with the former Gunners left-back. If we manage to grab a couple of decent signings during the summer then there is no reason why we shouldn’t be able to challenge for the title next season. I only hope that we finish the season off in the same run of form we are currently in. Our next fixture is away to QPR and if I’m honest it is definitely a winnable fixture for us.

We do still have a couple of tricky fixtures ahead. However, both are home games against Chelsea and Man City, which both take place during April. 18 points is the minimum that we should be aiming for from our remaining eight fixtures.

If Arsenal can complete the signing of Lucas Podolski it will go a long way to taking some of the pressure off of Robin van Persie and also give us more attacking options.

Winterburn went on to say:

‘If they can continue their recent revival until the end of the season and then start off again next year, hopefully they will put themselves in a position to challenge for the Premier League. That is what everybody wants.’

With Mario Gotze yesterday signing a new deal with Borussia Dortmund, it now means that we will need to look elsewhere for an attacking midfielder. I’m not sure who else Arsene Wenger is eyeing up, but I hope we start to get some snips of information about this in the upcoming weeks.

With just eight games to go, the main focus currently is to finish about the enemy and it may just come down to how we play against City and Chelsea that decide our fate, as it looks like Tottenham have an easier run of games than we do and are coming off the back of an FA Cup win.

Can Arsenal challenge for the title next year??? In my opinion, yes they can.

With a couple of proper stellar signings and without any drama that this season has dished out on us, I see no reason why Arsenal shouldn’t not only challenge for the Premier League title, but also end our trophy drought.

I suppose it`s a fair question to ask. How in the hell did we end up with all these dud players costing somewhere in the region of 23 million pounds a year in wages? Some times a purchase doesn`t work out, that`s acceptable but we`re talking about seven or eight earning in excess of 50 thousand pounds a week and never participating, and we talk of a viable, profitable trading company living off it`s own cash flow. Seems a lot of waste to me.
