Well it’s been a pretty weird couple of days with the transfer window and saying that Man City are jealous of .

We were kind of hoping that at 11pm on Tuesday night normality will be resumed and common sense would sweep its way across the Premier League. Sadly it appears to have fallen short of Man City, who have decided to respond with ‘Arsenal are in fact Jealous of City’. To be honest, both and Ivan Gazidis need a slap around the ear and to be told to zip it.

Corrigan recently stated:

‘I think it’s the opposite way round. Everybody in the Premier League has got this little bit of jealousy that Man City can go out and spend this money. Everybody is saying they are buying their way to the top but it is a difficult proposition for a manager because you are buying all these superstars and trying to gel them all together.’

So in true Gunnersphere style we are going to take a look at Arsenal and Man City’s expenditure since the 2008/09 season. (Arsenal figures are in red).

2008/09 season

Outgoing – £121.85 million – £15.75 million

Incoming – £8.8 million – £19.3 million

Trophies won – 0

2009/10 season

Outgoing – £160.21 million – £10 million

Incoming – £19.5 million – £41 million

Trophies won – 0

2010/11 season

Outgoing – £77 million – £14.5 million

Incoming – £10.75 million – £7.7 million

Trophies Won – one for City

2011/12 season

Outgoing – £51 million – £54.23 million

Incoming – £15.86 million – £67.83 million

Trophies won – ?

So in the space of four years Man City have spent an incredible £410,060,000 on players and received an income of £54,910,000 and in doing so have secured one FA Cup. Whilst Arsenal have in the same amount of time spent just £94,480,000, with a player income of £135,830,000.

Now are Arsenal jealous of that one FA Cup trophy? In my opinion, since it has come at a price of £314,900,000, I would say NO CHANCE!

In the same four year period Arsenal made a profit of £41,350,000.

So Mr. Joe Corrigan perhaps you think that Arsenal are Jealous of City, but taking a look at what your former club has actually achieved in the last four years, I really would like to see you backup your claims that we are in fact envious of you guys. In my response to your claims, all I can say is that I welcome the financial fair play regulations coming into affect very soon.

Corrigan is right. Thanks to Wenger the gunners have gone on the downhill since 2005.This reminds me of the fox who lost his tail.
I believe Wenger has wasted a lot of time and he would have been fired at any big team.
This could be his final season if the gunners continue to misfire.Time for a change.

Joe you big bully, leave poor little Ivan alone. This article is more pathetic than anything Gazidis or Corrigan said.

I wish someone would give Ivan the Terrible a wedgie and steal his lunch money. It’s the least he deserves for dragging Arsenal down to mid-table.

At least Arsenal are not winning trophies in the right way :)

Surely the point of spending all the Sheikh’s money was to build a team to compete for silverware – which City undeniably are, see current league table.

Arsenal are not competing in the league, and not looking like winning anything realistically this season again, so who is right and who is wrong? (big Joe Corrigan for my money).

I don’t want to get into this unnecessary confrontation between the envy n jealous of both clubs.

Man C and ourselves have a similar problem – managers. They have the fire power, but unable to deliver when it matters. {Not a leader of men} We have a manager who is forward thinking, good coach but where his weakness rests, he would not bring in the right support in terms of a tactician and decent assistant coach that could think on his feet.

Corrigan is making much more sense than that idiot Gazidis. Most Arsenal fans would much rather be at the top of the league while out of the CL and FA Cup but with someone like Usmanov putting his personal wealth into the club. I know I would and i’ve been an Arsenal fan for 30 years.

Come off it! Joe Corrigan hasn’t worked for Manchester City since the 1980s. After 10 years at Liverpool, he’s since coached around the lower leagues, retired, come back again, but at no point has he re-joined his old club City. His comments being represented as the views of Manchester City is laughable.

Erm, I think you’ll find that he is cuurently employed at City in an ambassadorial roll actually

    Blue5 Reply:

Oh, come on, he’s part of a large group of ex-players who sometimes appear on the corporate hospitality list at City. Suggesting that his views represent the club’s is like saying Charlie Nicholas is press spokesman for Arsenal when he’s talking to Jeff Stelling. Lets have some realism here please.

Poor little lamb, do you REALLY think financial fairplay is going to make 1 jot of difference?

It’s pretty simple – If Uefa dare to enforce it the the big boys will start their own breakaway competition. Just wait.

My opinion is that City will in fact benefit from FFFP regs as we are now an established top four team, whilst those who fail to qualify next year, potentially Arsenal and Liverpool, will fall further behind as a consequence – what goes around comes around eh?

  • Swiss Says:

To be fair to Joe, he was only responding to your guys rediculous comments!

Are City jealous of Arsenal? No why would we be? We’re on an upwards curve whilst Arsenal are finding things difficult at the moment!

Arsenal fail to bring in established players and try to buy young and nuture the talent. That’s all well and good but you’re not going to get a superstar everytime.

As for FFP rules… well you’ve just built a spanking new stadium which will earn you a packet at the huge prices you guys charge for tickets, alienating your original fans, breeding a corporate culture. So when the FFP rules come in, you’ll be able to spend the money generated from that – Is this not an unfair advantage over the teams with smaller stadiums?

whats good about the FFP is maybe now we’re able to see clubs not ask for massive amounts of money for players.

Is City ruining football with their money? That only seems to be the answer for City and Chelsea. Established teams seem to begrudge new money as they’ve had it their own way for far too long. 20 years! Now it seems it’s ok when Liverpool spend £35 mil on Carroll, Ok when UTd spend 30 mil on Rio, 31.5 on berbatov… Ok when Real buy Ronaldo for 80mil… but when City Buy Roinho for £31m and Aguero for £25 etc etc it’s disgusting! How dare they!

Didn’t you pay upto £15mil for Oxlaid-chamberlain? Wow – that’s a huge amoutn for an unproven 17 year old! And you talk of city pushing up the prices for players! We bought Adam Johnson for £7mil!

So yes, it does sound like you’re jealous of our money!

Good luck with your ailing squad in dire need of investment… What’s it done for you? Your best stars are leaving – RVP isn’t happy, how long will he stay? You’re looking very nervous about finishing in the top 4 this season, what will the loss of champs league football do for your finances – Is it sad for you to see your team becomming a selling club?

  • Iain Says:

You man city “fans” are amazing you really are, you have spent £314 million JUST to win the FA Cup and you think your the biggest of the big?

Lets not forget that you just lost to everton and are now back on level points with Man Utd. Arsenal may not win a trophy this season or we may win the FA Cup and I can guarantee that currently Man City are in danger of winning nothing.

So all that money all the promises of Champions League glory, Premiership glory will come down to another summer and another £100+ million spent.

So you can go ahead and try and buy your way to the title it’s been 4 years so far and you’ve not managed it I’m looking forward to the end of the season and both Man City and $amir Na$ri winning nothing.

  • Swiss Says:

And you call us deluded, you keep hanging on to the theory you’re still one of the big boys with your awesome footballing philosophy…

Yes… we’re all about winning trophies… Do you not think for us fans it’s just about competing at the top and for trophies!

Though it will be disapointing not winning anything, It’s nice to be along for the ride – We have no god given right to expect to win anything, we still haev to work hard.

I’m surprised you’ve not mentioned City crashing out of the champs league and the fact you’re still in it… well until you get knocked out again…

  • Daniyal Says:

I am proud of Arsenal’s philospohy and personally find the way Man city operate pathetic. I wouldn’t want Arsenal that way ever, even if it bought the success of the current barcelona team. Man city is not a football club, it is a plaything of rich billionaire Arabs who have no idea what to do with the excess money they have. It is not an investment to them(like it is to the glazers), it is simply a toy and that is simply not acceptable.

having said that the reason, right now, man city are in a much better position than arsenal to compete for trophies is because they are on the way up while arsenal have been regressing steadily. It doesn’t matter if man city have only won 1 trophy, they are progressing. And it is not just Arsene’s fault or the club’s fault, or anyone in particular, the spending gap is simply too big between the clubs. That is the bottom line.

  • ken lo Says:

Daniyal, how can you say Shitty are in a better position to win trophies?
They are being caught by Utd in the premier (we could still win it) they are out of the f.a.cup (we are still in it) out of champions league (we are still in it)and cannot buy until next season.
They have a manager who has lost the dressing room, have mercenaries playing for them (Na%ri) losing millions on bad buys (Adebayour, Tevez etc) and have lost their soul to an Arab billionaire.
The only thing that they do have are loyal supporters who stick with their team through thick and thin over years of failure.
Why dont we show the same loyalty to our great club and manager?
Because so called gooners are nothing more than trophy hunters..go and support Chelski for gods sake and give us back our club..in Arsene we trust forever!!!!

  • Ross Says:

For everyone moaning about not having a trophy. Our achievement is paying off a fuckload of money! Every season since we bought the stadium we chip away at the enormous debt. We’ve been competitive and we’ve come close to silverware but most importantly we’ve kept our heads above water and paid what needs to be paid and more thanks to the Boards trust in Wenger and his style of management: frugality, youth, and the ability to instil confidence into a team that helps them punch above their weight –
yes, I said punch above their weight because that’s exactly what we’ve done (jury’s still out on this season). Other clubs in our position would sink.

You moan about trophies but we’re lucky that we’ve even played CL football since the move. When Wenger goes he’ll leave the club with an asset that will last for 50+ years; one completely owned by the club that will equate to billions of dollars in revenue, that will pay for team upon team to be created so you can be entertained yet you can’t handle 7 years without a trophy. You myopic sods!

We’re struggling, true but you gotta’ look at the bigger picture (there are factors outside of football!) and realise that we’ve been lucky. Just you wait and see. When other clubs buy new stadiums (which all the bigger clubs except MU are vying for, unsuccessfully I might add) they’ll follow our model; youth, no large inward transfers and selling the players we can get good money for; and they’ll struggle like hell unless they have a manager like Wenger.

He and the Board said it from the very start. The stadium is a long term investment and 7 years is not long term. We’ve 7 more years to finish paying the sucker off so get used to it!
