The ‘biggest mistake’ Arsenal could make?

Ex-Gunner Emmanuel Petit has been very vocal about Arsenal of late and credit to him. I have agreed with what he has said so far and again today as yesterday the former France international has leaped to the defence of Arsene Wenger, claiming getting rid of the Frenchman would be a big mistake:

‘I think that will be probably the biggest mistake at Arsenal.’

He went onto to say:

‘If Arsene has to leave the club they need to find a big manager to settle down and that would be very difficult for the next manager.

‘I think Arsene’s still the solution. They need to change a few things in the transfer market, change a few things in their politics to bring a competitive team.’

I think if we were to get rid of Wenger then we would lose many of our players, and I am still 100% convinced that it is the board that need to either go or get a huge kick up the backside.

A lot of teams and fans call for managers to be sacked every single season. Let’s take Chelsea as a prime example, every fan wanted AVB in charge and then, not even 12 months later, the majority are calling for him to be given the sack.

Wenger is a world class manager and yes there are some problems, but a big part of those problems he has no control over, for example the wage structure the club has. It has long been known that this was a problem at Arsenal, but it is the board of directors that control this, not Wenger.

Wenger has done brilliantly for the club in terms of finances, we wouldn’t be where we are today at a world class stadium without the work that Arsene has done with the club.

I know it is a tough time, but we have to decide who is to blame for the largest amount of the problems and in this fans opinion it is the board of directors who should be held accountable for not allowing the club to have the wage structure that is so drastically needs.

Sacking Wenger does not resolve the problem with the board, it just means that they are then in a position to bring in someone else and show they are not afraid to sack a manager like Arsene to keep the club running the way that benefits them the most.

The biggest mistake Arsenal could make is to give Weneger a load of money to buy new players. Then watch him still try to play his own intellectual, purist brand of football with no real tactical adjustments according to circumstance. Still his own peculiar assessment of certain players who most fans think are rubbish. The same coaching yes men while the great man remains on an obsessive mission to prove he is right. The season would again go tits up for Arsenal when the slow, heavy, uneven winter pitches arrive. It always does.

Make no mistake this is not about money. Dein was Wengers best friend when the club ditched him and out of fear of losing Wenger the board gave him total control. He set about Arsenal like a project of fantasy. No amount of money will either save Wenger or change Wenger. Good players join Arsenal and become disillusioned and lost. Outside of Van Persie, a striker, Only 2 players in recent years have shown themselves to be naturally classy, Fabregas and Wilshire. Both are allowed to play a free role. The rest are continually played out of position for long periods of time where they stagnate. Are the two things a coincidence?

Absolute power corrupts absolutely and Wenger is in free fall. Zero study of opposition takes place. Zero focus on defending as a unit takes place. His success came from the ready made defence that Dein told him he cannot touch when he joined us. His successful defence of 2004, whilst his own, learnt from the old heads. He has overseen a laughable wage structure rewarding laughable players.

If this man wants to save face, If he wants to be remembered in a positive light he has to learn to delegate. He has to let others in and allow them to do their job. Will he do that? I believe not.

Iain, you are in dreamland if you think the board make wage decisions. The Mata deal did not go through because Wenger believed him not to be worth the price. Djourou, a poor 4th choice defender has been rewarded with a 50k per week contract. Do you honestly believe the board made that decision without Wengers input?

Very simply, any person, any organization, any football club in this case, cannot continue to do the same thing and expect a different result. While changing a leader – manager in this case – should never be taken lightly or done on a whim as happens in West London, this team will not become what it could be – no matter what does or does not change with the transfer policies or wage structure – unless there is a change of energy and voice in the dressing room and on the training ground. The players are not getting his message anymore, if there still is one, you can tell by the player’s body language/confusion on the pitch.

The club and business may prosper due to the sustainable model, but I along with many other Gooners here in the States – and there are many, many of us over here – don’t get up at 5am to watch how my favorite business is doing…

Best thing that could happen is that this season sinks so low that Arsene will ride off into the sunset on his own. He’s earned the right to go out on his own terms. I’ve always been a big supporter of his, but have sadly realized Arsenal’s football will not get better with him as the leader. He won’t change.
