According to The Sunday People, Arsenal lead the chase to sign Crewe Alexandra wonderkid Nick Powell in a deal worth £1.25 million this summer.
Arsenal chief scout Steve Rowley watched the 17-year-old attacking midfielder against Barnet just before the January transfer window closed.
Big-spenders Chelsea and Manchester city, as well as Championship side Ipswich, are also thought to be on the trail of Powell, so the Gunners will be keen to try and land him before any of the other three clubs express take their interest further. As a result, Arsene Wenger has told his scouting team to keep tabs on the England Under-17 international.
Thankfully for Crewe boss Steve Davis he was able to keep hold of the talented teen, who was linked with a big move away from the Alexandra Stadium, until at least until the end of the season:
‘That big offer we couldn’t refuse didn’t come in before the deadline.’
Powell, a youth product of the League Two club, made his breakthrough into the senior side just last year, where he made 19 appearances in all competitions.
So far this season the youngster has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Steve Davis’ team, netting seven goals along the way.
