Arsenal target Jan Vertonghen could be sold in the summer, according to Ajax coach Frank de Boer.

The Belgian international, who once pleaded for the Gunners to make a move for him a year-and-a-half ago, is out of contract in 2013 and recently revealed that talks over a new deal to keep him at the Amsterdam Arena have all but stalled:

The 24-year-old told AT5:

‘There is talk of a contract extension, but not much has been said.

‘Perhaps Ajax will find it to be a good thing when I leave, I don’t know.

‘But I think that in the future I could have a very good transfer.’

On the matter, Ajax manager Frank de Boer told Eredivisie Live that Vertonghen either has to renew or relocate:

“We know that his contract expires in 2013. So it’s either renew or relocate to a good foreign club, where Ajax would also benefit from a transfer fee.

‘We already told Jan last year that we are keen to hold on to him. We will open talks early in March to discuss a new deal.’

This will undoubtedly come as good news to Arsenal and all clubs indeed interested in the centre-back. However, it remains undetermined whether or not Vertonghen will sign a new deal with Ajax or be sold by the Dutch club in the next transfer window.

The versatile Belgian, who is known for his technical ability, aerial prowess and strong shooting, has made 15 league appearances for Ajax so far this season, netting 3 goals in the process.
