When it comes to Arsenal’s pursual of Borussia Dortmund’s mercurial midfielder Mario Gotze things seem to be changing on a day-to-day basis.
At first Dortmund came out and said that they wouldn’t let go of the 19-year-old for anything less than £30 million. Next it’s rumoured that Arsenal are set to level a £25 million bid this January (typical). The latest (probably nonsense) stirrings regarding the Gunners and Gotze, is that Dortmund are considering accepting Arsenal’s estimation for their player.
But should Dortmund stand by their own estimation? Would Arsene Wenger be willing to up his bid in order to attain the services of one of world football’s most talented youngsters? Or could this be another case of Arsenal getting priced out of the market?
It comes down to this question: Is Gotze worth £30m and do Arsenal really need him?
I’d argue that Gotze would be worth every penny. His technical skill, speed and creativity are virtually unmatched in his age group and given his young age he’s only going to get better. This is a young player who could go on to be a world-great and you simply can’t pick up prodigies like these at bargain bin prices.
However, when you consider that Lille want £40 million for Eden Hazard, £30 million for Gotze begins to look like something of a bargain. Both have a similar level of talent and potential (though I’d argue that Mario is more consistent) and both are worthy of their high price-tags.
Wenger spent well this summer, bringing in Mikel Arteta to bolster the midfield. However, it doesn’t seem to me that they’ve found the creative flair necessary to adequately replace Cesc Fabregas who left the north London side to join boyhood club Barcelona this summer.
The fact that Gotze has come out and said he’d only leave Dortmund for Arsenal or Barcelona also plays into Wenger’s hands. Given that Barca have just signed Cesc, I find it highly unlikely that they’ll be in the market for another central midfielder. That puts the Gunners in pole position – a rarity for them when it comes to plucking up world class players in the transfer window.
While Arsene isn’t known for spending big, he has proven that he’s willing to loosen the purse strings when necessary (case in point: this summer). And if he is going to spend big on anybody, wouldn’t Mario Gotze be the perfect addition?

Arsene wenger should please sign an experience players to support all the players we have. Sign Gotze and Eden
That’s the player we need, and that price is not a bad market considering his age and skill. I prefer him and a central striker
