Theo Walcott recently made an astute statement. The Englishman said that the goal scoring burden has to be taken off the shoulders of Robin van Persie.

Needless to say Van Persie has been on an excellent run of form ever since his comeback from his last big lay-off last December. The Dutchman now sits on top of the Premier League scoring charts with 13 goals.

Theo’s form has been improving as of late as well, with the fiery English international threatening full-backs with his pace and chipping in with assists. But the winger believes he needs to also start scoring more to help out Robin:

‘The only side of things that I want to get in my game is a few more goals. We can’t always rely on Robin but the form he has been in it is fantastic to see.’

Walcott should have got himself on the score sheet against Fulham last Saturday, but was very unselfish. His own form aside, Theo says Van Persie has not only been scoring freely, but also creates enough scoring chances within 90 minutes. But feels somebody should step up and finish the chances that are being created by the Dutchman:

‘People will think it is weird when he doesn’t score in a game but he creates chances still. It would be worrying if you didn’t see Robin creating chances, but he is and the man is on fire which makes my job easier.’

The Fulham game is a fair reflection of Walcott’s thoughts. Van Persie was playing his third game in seven days and looked jaded, which might have been the reason why he didn’t score on Saturday. There was no better time for others to chip in with goals which also didn’t happen and The Gunners had to settle for a draw.

Theo himself feels that he and his team-mates should share the burden that RVP currently has on his shoulders:

‘As a team we need to help him out a bit more often in getting those goals.’

Arsenal will be playing 8 games in December and 8 more in January (if they beat City in the Carling Cup tonight), during which Arsene Wenger will definitely be looking to change things around on a regular basis to keep players fresh.

Last season during the festive period, Wenger made 8 changes per game. Arsenal will be tackling both Manchester giants in the next two months and have a couple more tricky ties within these days. If Arsenal need Van Persie to be firing on all cylinders during this hectic period they will need somebody else to take some weight off his shoulders.

Wenger may plan to play Walcott through the middle in some games if Van Persie is rested. However, one shouldn’t forget that even Walcott requires rest, he has been fit for a long time now, but one can’t risk losing him as he is becoming an important player for this team.
