Farfan for Arshavin – deal or no deal?

Hot off the back of my previous Andrey Arshavin post, it now appears Schalke are preparing to offer Arsenal a swap deal for the Russian international in January.

According to reports in Germany, the German club do not want to lose Jefferson Farfan on a free transfer and are willing to do a straight swap deal with Arsenal for the £15 million rated Peruvian for the underperforming Arshavin.

The swap could be more beneficial to Arsenal, as Andrey is now 30-years-old, compared to Farfan, who has only recently turned 27.

Let’s take a look at Farfan in action:

I know it’s only a Youtube video, but the Peru international has got talent.

The former PSV man is strong, quick and has a piercing eye for goal. Furthermore, Farfan has experience in the Champions League, which could help The Gunners in the latter stages of the competition.

Since joining Schalke back in 2008, Farfan has managed to bag 32 goals and 32 assists in 136 appearances (in all competitions) for the Bundesliga side – a goal ratio of approximately 1 every 4.5 games, which is not bad, but could be slightly better.

In any case, if he is going to have more of an impact and perform better than Arshavin has done in the last few seasons, then in my opinion, we should really consider this potential swap deal in January – unless of course we get a better offer from Anzhi.

It is just a youtube video. I have heard he has a bad work rate, and is a sulk. We don’t need that.
Grosskreutz will be much better. Hard worker, strong, quick and can score.

    • max says:

grosskreutz is crap, no technique at all. he’s a workhorse thats all he got.

    • Alex says:

I have watched Dortmund play on a few occasions and i must say Grosskreutz has nothing on the club’s other attacking players, he is miles behind Kagawa or Gotze..

      • WC says:

Which is why he isn’t an attacking player – he’s, as said above, a workhorse who has an above average compsure on the ball than others in his position.

I’ve seen him being called a winger, attacking midfielder, striker but nowhere is he called a central midfielder because that’s what he is. He reminds me of Flamini in his last season with us – runs like hell, breaks up opposition play and his energy provides an outlet for a pass or creates space. He just happens to be able to score a few goals and assists while he’s at it.

Of course if what i heard is wrong, then i wouldn’t mind him at all!!

no chance of this deal goin thru..farfan is a hit and miss once in a blue moon d player produces if v argue bout arshavin being same den in arshavin’s defence he is better quality …. hamsik / podolski is ideal replacement for arshavin.

    NO WAY IN HELL!!

we already have too many utterly average players clogging up the squad so the good youngsters never get a game and they are costing us millions on wages eg squillaci djourou denilson diaby vela bendtner chamackh arshavin.

either sign someone top class to improve the squad or keep it the same

    • Domhuaille MacMathghamhna says:

Denilson,Vela and Bendtner’s wages are paid by their loan Clubs but Djourou,Diaby,Chamakh and Arshavin while not in form or still injured, do have contracts and therefore earn their keep. Who do you suggest we sign who is affordable and top class and willing to come to AFC?

  • 49Unbeaten says:

This would be a terrible move. Farfan is NOT what we need. Arshavin has 30 goals and 34 assists in 119 games from the WING! In 119 games he’s been responsable for 64 goals which is quite astounding considering the amount of stick he gets for a player played out of position.

  • lewis says:

or option 3. made up rumours from the mill

  • Nonny says:

Farfan is another average player with more bad days on the pitch than good. Wouldn’t add quality to the team. I say NO DEAL!

  • Domhuaille MacMathghamhna says:

Wenger won’t let Arshavin go unless AA asks to be transferred because he’s not getting enough playing time. However AW’s 30+ policy will mean that Arshavin wouldn’t get a long term contract offer in the summer so he’ll probably go.
Farfan is younger and under AW’s guidance he could be a very useful player but we do have quite a few talented midfielders and wingers at AFC so maybe AW will sell AA to the highest bidder in January. He has never traded a player for another one to my knowledge but I could be mistaken.

    need to sw

  • WC says:

i used to think Farfan was a decent player at Ajax and he was good in the ducth league but since moving from there he’s been kind of just average. We don’t need another one of those – we already have Arshavin, Denilson, Diaby, Squidface filling that quota. He would be a terrible swap but I’d much rather take money and go buy a more consistent world class player. Surely we can get 10-12M for Arshavin or even dupe someone to pay the same 15M for him.
