Why I’m not surprised to hear RVP stalling on a new deal

So Robin van Persie has recently claimed that he is in no rush to sign a new deal at Arsenal.

The Dutch striker, who this past Saturday netted his 100th goal for the club, recently stated:

‘I still have almost two years, so for the moment that’s fine. I’m happy with my contract. I can’t look into the future. I can’t see us talking now because we are so busy – we have games every three or four days.’

He added:

‘Maybe we will leave it until the end of the season.’

To be honest, this news has not shocked me as it may have done to those who are reading this. In fact, it’s a response from the forward that I expected, especially when you consider what took place during the summer and current circumstances so far this season.

But I believe a lot will depend on what we do this season. In my view, silverware is a must if we want to retain the services of our club captain.

It appears that I am not the only one who isn’t surprised with RVP’s latest comments over a new deal. Arsenal legend Martin Keown isn’t shocked either.

Van Persie has entered the final two years of his current deal, yet Keown believes that the Dutchman has simply been honest about his future and has underlined just how important this season really is for the Gunners.

The former Gunners centre-back told the Daily Mail:

‘Robin van Persie has given an honest answer about his future and it underlines what an important season it is for Arsenal.’

‘To avoid losing him in similar circumstances to Samir Nasri, Arsenal need a good campaign. Van Persie is not getting any younger and will want to play with the best players and see the club grow.’

‘So in that sense it is not a surprise that he wants to wait until the end of the season for contract talks. He will want to make sure Arsene Wenger is there too because the manager is the most important person at the club.’

He finished off by saying:

‘Wenger can persuade him to stay.’

In my opinion, the club should solely concentrate on the season ahead, rather than tying players down to new long-term deals.

As I stated earlier, a lot will depend on what we do this season, in terms of those (RVP, Walcott, Vermaelen and Arshavin) whose contracts are running down. If we do well this season – maybe bag a trophy along the way, fingers crossed we do – then players will want to stay and extend their deals at the club. However, if we fall short of our expectations then expect more bad news to come our way.

  • Cornelius says:

RVP is right to do so…Asking to commit to a ship that has direction is not fair.
Alot is involved in contract talks than just a signature. He needs assurances on:
    -His fees/salary
    -Arsenal’s Sporting Direction
-New Players comming in and their reputation
    -January Action
    – Arsenal Trophies

He may actually force the board to buy more players in January to support his goals

My question is: why is everyone talking about RvP’s contract and not our Bolton win and his 100 goals? why? why? This is a non-story at the moment!!!!
