Robin van Persie is usually deployed as a main striker at Arsenal, but the 28-year-old believes he will do well in a free role playing just behind the striker, following his four goal rout for the Netherlands on Friday.
The Dutchman played just behind Klaas Jan Huntelaar in the Netherlands 11-0 demolition of San Marino, and after the match Van Persie admitted that he enjoyed the new role.
He told OnsOranje:
‘This game I had a free role. That was fun. But at Arsenal I play as a striker, that’s what I do every day.’
Nobody doubts the technical ability that Van Persie possesses. He can thread a perfect through ball, take the perfect free kick, and dribble around some of the best defenders in the world.
I believe Arsene Wenger should consider playing our number 10 just behind our main striker, maybe Ju Young Park this season.
With RVP playing in his ‘new role’, we have another player pulling the strings to create goals, instead of leaving that job solely to our midfielders.
I believe Van Persie will step up in a big way this season, especially with the loss of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri this summer. He is the club captain, and by playing him in that free role, he will be able to have a much larger influence on the pitch, apart from just putting the ball in the back of the net.
So, should Wenger consider deploying RVP in a free role this season?

Myself I have never consider Robyn a lone striker, he has too much football in him. He should fill the role of `troublemaker` just behind a goal hungry, no nonsense, “one two, hit it” type of striker…maybe Parks-Young…and be available to clean up the scraps, which he is very good at. Yes! Arsene, give him his head and a `free role`. He could also be tried with Walcott as main central striker on a rotation basis, we need to experiment and not be fixed in our ways. Gervinho will add lots of variety and we still have Miyiachi to come. Just fix that central defense Arsene.
But, will wenger do that?
