Another quality defender may be up for grabs as Ajax look to cash in on Jan Vertonghen, depending on how they fare in their Champions League this season.
Vertonghen has attracted strong interest from Arsenal and Liverpool in the past and is also on the radar of several other European clubs.
Ajax plan on holding on to Belgium international until next summer, but may sell the 24-year-old centre-back in January, if their Champions League campaign ends in the group stages. The Eredivisie outfit are in Group D alongside Real Madrid, Lyon and Dinamo Zagreb.
Oddly enough, Lyon are one of the clubs keeping an eye on the Belgian’s situation and, according to reports in France, the Ligue 1 side could be ready to show their interest with a January bid. However, the French club could face stiff competition from Liverpool and Arsenal given their previous interest.
In my opinion, Vertonghen would be a great buy for Arsenal and is just what we need, a consistent centre-back. However, another problem that we may face is the gelling process, if we sign him of course, and the language barrier, unless he’s partnered with fellow Belgian international Thomas Vermaelen.
Another top class defender will certainly bring about more competition for places in the Premier League campaign, as he will be cup-tied for the Champions League.
If Ajax are keen on cashing in, it’s up to Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal board to splash the cash, and with the club in its current situation that seems highly likely.

Should this even posed as a question? This kid is solid and is better than Vermaelen. I would love to see him at Arsenal to help correct our defensive woes.
I don’t think there will be a language barrier, most young belgian (flemish) and dutch people already have basic/advanced understanding of English. It’s the second or third language they learn in school.
Yes buy him, POdolski and gotze and we Are In the cl NeXT year!
Jan Vertonghen is really an amazing player…there will be no language-barrier, because our second language in school is english!
No arrogance, just solid defence.
I hope he doesn’t leave, but if he decides to leave, it would be great to see that he goes to Arsenal.
