Former Arsenal striker Tony Woodcock has challenged Arsene Wenger’s squad by asking if the club have the bottle to get away from the bottom of the Premier League.

The ex-England international is fully aware that his former club are in trouble, sitting just one spot clear of the relegation zone and is wondering if they are mentally strong enough to pull away from the bottom, despite an awful start to the season.

Woodcock stated:

‘We’ve seen over the years that clubs can go down that are not expected to. It’s early days, only a few games. This togetherness, this determination, if you haven’t got it to pick a trophy up then how’s it going to be to get away from the relegation zone? I hope I’m not right.’

The 55-year old also added:

‘But I don’t want to be sitting here in three or four weeks and they’ve let some more goals in and they haven’t picked up any points. We’ve gone six years without winning anything and are now in this tricky situation. I’m hoping it’s going to be a bit of a kick up the backside for everyone.’

However, despite all the negatives, he did manage to point out some of the positives surrounding the Gunners at the moment:

‘The club are very stable, have got a fantastic stadium, have a fantastic training ground, and are making a profit. Although we’re not very happy with where Arsenal are at the moment, there are lots of pluses and positives that have been happening at the club.’

‘It’s not all doom and gloom. There’s a bigger picture there as well.’

To be honest, I feel Woodcock has been a bit harsh on Arsenal.

Yes the mood is very down and several fans are angry at present, but I’m sure the club and players have plenty of ‘bottle’ to get them back on track.

We desperately need another win under our belts, and I thought the win against Swansea would have been the turning point. However, the performance against Blackburn was in all honesty, appalling. The defending was an absolute joke and hopefully our back-line will wake up when we take on Bolton this weekend.

I think Wenger needs to get rid of Johan Djourou, who just seems to be getting worse with every game he plays.

We have the bottle…we just need a leader.
