Here are 10 things you should know about Arsenal’s new signing Andre Santos:

1. Andre Santos was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He started his youth career at Figueirense where he went on to sign his first professional contract.

2. While playing for Figueirense, Santos was used as a left winger. He made his full debut for the squad in July 2003.

3. Having spent the majority of 2005 and 2006 on loan at Flamengo and Atlético Mineiro, Santos finally sealed a deal to Corinthians in 2008.

4. It was at Corinthians that Andre Santos was given the role as an attacking left-back – this is the role that he would go on to have a great success in.

5. His awards during his time at Corinthians included the Brazilian Serie B, Copa Do Brasil and Campeonato Paulista. His Corinthians career was to be short lived though after moving to Fenerbahçe the following season.

Let’s take a look at the man in action:

6. Signing for Fenerbahçe on the 20th of July 2009, Santos faced tough competition for his position from another man – Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos. It was a battle that Santos won and, shortly after, Carlos moved to Santos’ former club Corinthians.

7. During his two season stay at Fenerbahçe, Santos went on to play 52 games, scoring 10 goals along the way.

8. Many Arsenal fans will recall that Fenerbahçe were removed from the UEFA Champions League recently. However, they may not be aware that Fenerbahçe were also relegated amongst details of match fixing. Andre Santos has stated that his decision to leave the Turkish outfit had nothing to do with the scandal and that he was leaving a club he had a lot of fond memories of. He may return to his former club later on in his career.

9. It was finally announced that he had signed for Arsenal on the summer transfer deadline day (August 31st) and was given the no.11 shirt.

10. Upon signing for Arsenal, Santos stated: ‘I am delighted to have signed for Arsenal. It was one of my dreams to play for a major European football club and I have accomplished this. I am very happy to be part of this team. All the Brazilians who came to this club spoke wonders about it and I am delighted to be part of the Arsenal family.’

Played Wing-back for Brazil until dropped for being bad at time keeping. He played every game sinced the world cup. He’s very good at going forward. He’s very quick. He’s very strong physically. He’s vey good at crossing. He’s very good at taking set pieces. He’ll be back in the Brazil side soon now his profile is being raised higher than it was at Fenerbache. He’s good at tracking back. He provides many assists and he’ll score an average of 12 goals per season in all competions if he plays more than 50 games.

9 club captains in the first team, five captains of their national teams: Rosicky, Arshavin, Ramsey, Benayoun, Park. Club Captains also include Vermaelen, Arteta, Mertesacker, Van Persie.

Captains = Influence, organisation, leading by example. Santos can’t be a bad signing with his Brazil pedigree.

Out other players Ryo Miyaichi and Gervinho are top notch, Chamberlain will find his feet soon, Jenkinson is strong and physical and can play right across the defence, Frimpong will be massive for us as a DM quite soon, allowing Song to be a centre-half again if needed.

Remember that in the middle of all this excellence we have Jack Wilshere. What a team, eh? Wojciech Szczesny should also become much better with the improved defence protecting him.

yeh m8 the future is bright and the future is arsenal 🙂

  • Charlie says:

Important for Arsenal to have a talented overlapping full back. Teams sit back, attacking players are not given much space, the player coming from deep can make a huge difference. I think he’ll become a star.
