Signings ahoy!

Per Mertesaker, Andre Santos and Park Chu-Young all seem to be pretty much nailed on transfer deals.

I don’t like to count my chickens till I see them smiling in a red shirt, but it looks like we’re making some moves at long last.

Mertesaker is a top, top player and if we’ve got him then I’ll be very happy. At 6’6’’, he’s a monster. He’s good in the air and an excellent tackler. Any player that notches up 75 international appearances for Germany before he’s 27 is top class. Cheaper and better than both Cahill and Jagielka. Though I wouldn’t mind one of those guys too.

Santos looks like a great attacking full-back. Not sure about his defensive skills, but he still looks good. I’ve only scouted him on youtube, so I can’t be conclusive, but it’s worth noting that in 25 games last season he scored 5 goals. That’s more than some of our offensive players last year. Not bad for a left-back.

Park Chu-Young looks to be an excellent back-up striker, bought for a pittance. He seems to be a real talent and he’s captain of his country so would offer us some valuable leadership upfront. A typical Wenger signing if I ever saw one.

On top of these three players, we’ve been heavily linked with many, many others. Yossi Benayoun, Alex and Florent Malouda from Chelsea are the latest.

Out of the three, if I had to pick, I’d go for Malouda, as I think he’d bring something to our team.

Alex is a beast and I remember him battering us back when he played for PSV and if he’ll come we should sign him too, but whilst Benayoun is a good player, I fear he is so injury-prone that we wouldn’t get out of him what we need.

One player I would like us to sign and can’t for the love or money of me work out why we haven’t approached Raul Meireles from Liverpool. He’s real quality and would fill the gap left by Nasri nicely. But this is about rumours and not daydreams; let’s get back on track…

Over the channel there are several players that we have been linked with.

Eden Hazard isn’t coming unless we stump over £30 million, which I think we can all agree isn’t going to happen.

Then there is Marvin Martin, Mathieu Valbuena and Lucho Gonzalez. If one of them comes I imagine it will be Martin. I can’t imagine Marseille strengthening a Champions League rival, although stranger things have happened. Please feel free to write up any other players that we’ve been linked with in the comments section.

To sum up; there is plenty happening at Arsenal right now.

The weekends debacle has forced Wenger into additional spending that probably wouldn’t have happened had we not been so thoroughly embarrassed. Every cloud has a silver lining.

There’s less than 12 hours to go. Let’s hope we make the most of it.

Dont ahead of yourself lads. We are not as attractive as we were a few months ago. Not after getting that thrashing. Many players are wondering the depth of our decline and thinking: do I want to go into this sinking ship?

I am sad to be saying this to my beloved Arsenal but our team was allowed to get weaker year after year. I have to say it should have been realised years ago. 2-3 years ago we flattered ourselves by pressing the leaders although we lost the momentum in the end. This gave our leaders excuse to keep the money and insisting that we were unlucky instead of realising that there was something missing that has to be acquired inorder to get back to challenging at the top.

Last season was another of those season when flattered to deceive and we actually gave signs that things are’nt as they should be by throwing games after another; Games against Wigan, Newcasstle, West Brom come to mind but no action by those in charge.

What frightens is that the team throwing away games included Fabregas, Nassri and yet the team without the Nassri and Fabregas plus other 5-6 player was supposed to go to OT who are brimming with confidence? Who is kidding who here?

I would really love an inquiry into how really we came to be where we are now but no chance of that happening. I am really angry at the moment.

The defensive deals are all but done. Now want we want is to fill the void created by the departure of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. Since Gervinho gives us the extra wing option we essentially need two Central Midfielders. Ideally a CDM and CAM, and fingers crossed till 11pm, interesting options like M’Vila, Hazard, Marvin Martin, Arteta, Fellaini, Honda, Ribery etc are open. We leave the choice completely to Wenger, because ” In Arsene We Trust ”. GOONERTILLIDIE You could follow me on Twitter @AsimYousuf
