Samir Nasri – a mercenary of the modern game

Bye bye Samir. It was nice to know you. I hope you enjoy spending a fair chunk of time on the subs bench because that’s exactly what you’re going to be doing for the next few years at City.

So, Man City have done it again. They’ve spent an obscene amount of money on a player – they wanted him, they got him. Well done to you. Bravo. Didn’t you do well!

It’s already tiresome.

Chelsea have spent the last few years tapping up players, offering inflated wages and paying out transfer fees that ethically sourced football clubs just can’t compete with. City are merely following suit.

Forget goal-line tech. Forget FIFA corruption. These super-rich clubs are the biggest evil in the modern game. They operate without fear of reproach. They do whatever they want. FIFA and UEFA let them, but that’s beside the point.

How are clubs like ours supposed to compete with these teams? How are we supposed to stay at the top of our game when these rich clubs (notice I didn’t call them ‘big clubs’) can offer three or four times the wages that we can.

After two indifferent seasons at the Emirates, Nasri finally started playing the football we’d be paying him for. We nursed him through injuries and we’d played him through some seriously mediocre form. Now he’d come good, it was time for him to pay us back on the pitch.

The 24-year-old was rewarded for his efforts by an offer of a new contract – a staggering £90,000 a week. Let me say that again with caps lock on – £90,000 A WEEK! That is an incredible amount of money for anyone to earn and, for a club like ours, it is a substantial amount of money to commit to paying a player.

Now let’s get one thing clear, Nasri is already rich. This new contract was only going to make him richer. But was that enough?

It’s clear to me that Man City have gone and tapped up our player. Whether his agent was told what the deal on the table was, or whether he just took one of the figures leaked by City through the media, Nasri knew that there was more money up in Manchester and that they were interested.

It’s one thing to compete against clubs with unlimited wealth – it’s possible, but very hard. It’s another thing completely when the same clubs then wiggle wads of money under noses of your best players in order to make them jump ship.

Sure, you want your players to have a little backbone and to show some loyalty, but this loyalty is becoming less and less common in the modern game.

Half a season is what we got from Nasri. Three years of undeniably hard work, and half a season of footballing excellence. Instead of repaying the club for their loyalty to him, he’s now off to pastures light blue.

I know the counter-argument. If in any other job someone offered to pay you treble what you were currently on then you’d go in a heartbeat, but the treble the wages for you and I would make a massive difference to our quality of life. This isn’t the same for top footballers. What can Nasri buy now that he couldn’t buy last week?

It all comes down to greed – pure and simple. The Premier League is drowning in a sea of mercenaries. Nasri has had his head turned by a big pile of cash – shame on you Samir.

I don’t know what the solution is – wage caps or financial fair play, I just don’t know. What I am acutely aware of is that Arsenal have been pushed back on the ropes and we are currently reeling from losing two of our most influential players in as many weeks.

Man City are ruining the game for everybody else. It is becoming a farce. It is becoming deeply unfair. Until something is done to curb the spending power of these middle-sized super-rich clubs, honest teams like ours are just going to carry on getting ******!

did you read my comment on goon blog?

In this day and age i don’t even think players want to play all season.
If you could get a high wage in a big squad and not have to play all season or a lower wage in another team and have to play every game, which would you choose?
In the end, when you are 40-50-60, the money you have earned counts, the medals not so much.
This is the new face of football.

If thre were a wage cap it would have tobe UEFA, we see what this money race hs done to the Spanish League. Amerian pro sports have caps, in American football it is based on years played. The NFL has just put one in with a rookie cap, because you had players coming into the league, never played making more then the established players….Nasri is good, wish him the best, but Gervinho is already more effective and a beter passer. I think Nasri will be. Lets stop damning these kids for their lack of loyalty it is all about the money….like the gloom sayers saying Cesc would not get time at Barsa. He WILL play as much as Iniesta or Xavi…he is as good as them now. Should he have gone for more yea, but he did not. Now people need to pressure the board. The Arsenal salary cap should go up from 110 to 150, otherwise the signings that people want, big names or established players come with those type wages

i agree that nasri is a complete greedy bastard who just last season emphasized about club loyalty by not shaking gallas’ hand commenting about him going to spurs. well, loyalty my foot. ungrateful bastard. they are ruining the game, i can’t wait for emirates name to be dropped from stadium. and i can’t wait for the oil to be dry.

That was a wicked thing to say. One’s progress in life should not be hated or despised all because you are not happy with others progressing (probably you are not just like your club). how would you like others to curse you if you left a job to pursue another (even if the prospects is money related). Why are you not cursing at fabregas? these guys have spent time and energy dedicated to Arsenal but is it their fault that Arsenal refuses to bolster the club with quality players? You call him all sort of names whereas he as done nothing wrong. Should he stay for the miserly sum of 60k you pay when he can be offered three times that. Who amongst you is that foolish or stupid to include sentiments ion business deals. Come to think of it Arsenal benefitted alot from the deal. so what’s your problem? So ask yourself who is the greedy bastard? You who wants to keep a man under by paying him peanuts for a great job while making more for yourself and the board or a man who refuses to exploited and choose his own path in life. I guess that’s how your government direct your life proceedings such that you can hardly earn a living, no wonder many turned out to looting.

      Dreday:
If you think that offering to pay someone nearly one hundred grand a week is exploiting them then you are a complete moron.
And what the hell have the riots got to do with anything? You are clearly an idiot of the highest order.

  • dreday says:

mr creosote : I thought this was a site where reasonable people air their thoughts. i guess you are still amused by your newly found vocabs (moron and idiot) which never cease to baffle me why you sound so violent in nature (by their words we know them).Replying or exchanging words with you will only belittle me and put me in class where i don’t want be (like you).
I owe you explanation to my post. What a reasonable, cultured and sensible person would have done is to ask why this post. I guess you lack proper home training, or you where trained but refused to accept good and quality home training or probably missed something out in your upbringing (believe me there is something dis-functional about you).
Still on a lighter note, Nasri has every right to decide his future and that shouldn’t cause any fuss or insults.Arsenal should be happy they are making profit and also at the progress of their ex-players

    • Mr Creosote says:

HAHAHAHAHA. Replying or exchanging words with me will only belittle you? How can you get on your high horse one minute and then insult me the next. You muppet.
I stand by my evaluation of your character: You’re an idiot. Anyone who thinks that paying someone 60 grand a week and then offering them 100 grand a week is exploitation is moron of the highest calibre.
Nasri wanted out so he could earn stupid money. We’re not allowed to feel bitter if a player doesn’t stand by us when we need him after we’ve stood by him through injury and indifferent form? Again, you’re a idiot if you think that this is the case.
If you don’t like what I’ve got to say I couldn’t care less, but don’t think that it’s ok to be racist (a tiny handful of people started looting – and I notice that you didn’t mention which country you’re from – because I promise you its no better than mine) and insulting (dis-functional – lack proper home training etc) whilst at the same time spouting religious claptrap (by their words we will know them) and playing the higher moral game.
In the immortal words of Bart Simpson : Get Bent.

      • dreday says:

Mr Creosote: See who’s laughing last loser! (8-2). No wonder you are still a nobody and would like to ride high on the fact that your collapsing economy is better than mine. hey! think again. Lost soul, no wonder he calls it religious crap, (he is lost in this world). When a man does not understand the principles that governs the world he lives in abuse is inevitable. I guess the trash you are talking is what we should be spouting. Again you lack home training which could be linked probably to a defective upbringing or u were dropped on your head as a baby therefore the ability to reason intelligently has eluded you. I am not surprised since Bart Simpson is your mentor then i shouldn’t expect anything less (Cartoon character). Sayonara and God bless u!.In the eternal words of our Lord Jesus Christ By their fruit you shall know them. try that!

  • dreday says:

Mr Creosote Reply: clearly the laughter of a possessed deranged and delusional being is hahahaha (nowadays we it’s called “guffaw”) ask mad man of Gadarenes (Mark 5:5). Look, let’s call a truce and forget the whole conversation ever happened. Good to know you Creosote.

  • Hi, Neat post. There is an issue along with your web site in web explorer, might test this? IE nonetheless is the marketplace chief and a good section of other people will leave out your excellent writing because of this problem.
