Is Wenger right to rule out a move for this controversial midfielder?

Arsene Wenger has ruled out a move for controversial Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton – a player he has recently described as ‘great’.

The 28-year-old, who is available on a free this summer, was centre of attention when the two sides drew 0-0 at St James’ Park on Saturday after instigating a mass brawl which saw Gunners debutant Gervinho sent off.

Wenger was quoted in The Guardian stating:

‘Nobody dismisses signing Joey Barton but I don’t think we envisage doing that at the moment.’

‘I like the courage of the player. He’s a good player. Sometimes there’s trouble with his temper but he’s a great player.’

He jovially added:

‘Maybe the way to sort Barton out is to sign him. Maybe that’s the solution.’

Barton has been linked with a move to the Emirates and although he is the type of player Arsenal could do with in their midfield, it’s very hard to envisage the England international in the famous red and white following his latest antics.

If Wenger indeed wants to sign a midfielder within the next 16 days then he should look elsewhere. As good as Barton may be, the midfielder’s attitude and behaviour stinks – something we could do without at our club.

Yes Wenger is right to dismiss Joey Barton I would hate to see him in an Arsenal shirt, although he tried to wear Gervinho’s the other day.

I have never hated anybody as much as I do Joey Barton, I have said it all summer that I would rather go and watch spurs play all season than Joey Barton sign for Arsenal.

It’s my opinion that Barton is something we’re missing in our side when we fail to finish games off against the smaller clubs. I think Barton would also be too much for the sensitive kids at Arsenal, although it’s what they need to become winners. I would personally love to see Barton at Arsenal, but I have to bow down to the obvious better judgement of Wenger.

Iain, that’s fair enough mate. I feel the same way about John Terry and before him, Dennis Wise.

  • Sure. I mean, why should he sign a player that controversial? Even at Arsenal he’s a hated figure as he has created himself many haters, including Gervinho, Diaby and others.Bringing him in would create dressing room disorder other than the team spirit many claim he would bring. I don’t think if you are unable to afford chicken you resort to a marabou stork-Joey Barton! He should never wear an Arsenal shirt!
