A defensive option Wenger should seriously consider

Rumours are still floating around that Arsenal are looking to add a defender to their back-line this summer.

Following the recent capture of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Arsenal confirmed that they are still in the market for a few more additions before the window shuts at the end of the month.

Newly linked to Arsenal is out-of-favour Chelsea centre-back Alex, who will no doubt come as a major surprise to the majority reading this post.

The 29-year-old Brazilian is looking highly likely to spend the upcoming season on the bench at Chelsea – as he has fallen down the pecking order – and with Arsenal in the market for a defender, a potential move could be on the cards for The Gunners.

While I am in two minds whether this signing would even get off the ground, I am fully aware that Arsenal still need to sign a centre-back, and with the summer having been spent talking about Cahill, Samba and Jagielka (to no affect) things really need to start happening and fast.

I am sure Arsene Wenger is doing everything he can to sign a player to bolster our defence, so hopefully we should be hearing some good news regarding a defender in the upcoming days.

Would Alex be a good signing for the club? In all honesty, I think he fits the bill perfectly. He’s a strong defender, who has already scored 2 goals against us in his career (1 for Chelsea and the other for PSV Eindhoven), has good awareness and positioning and best off all, he loves to tackle.

Alex is valued at around £11 million, a fee which would please Wenger, especially when his other transfer targets are above £15 million.

I know he won’t be the fans first choice. However, at this stage, if it’s a choice of him or nothing then I think we should snap him up.

I’m first! Nope. NO. Nooooooo. While A decent player, is he a significant upgrade to JD, KoC or TV5. He certainly can’t be a injury cover for us, too injury prone himself. We want a starter to push the level of competition for Center Halves into a high gear. Not a another benchwarmer! Cheers.

A great idea, he also has a rocket of a free kick.
Still remains to be seen if we get defensive reinforcements at all. I hope we do. I am Arsenal till i die!

why doesnt arsene wenger just go out and buy metzeker (not sure if name is spelt correctly!) whatever its costs…just get him. it will solve many problems. stop keeping the money and buying under-rated defenders. just be wise for once!

First of all, I already heard the rumour, so that’s no surprise. second of all, Alex is a fella from the previous decade. While you could sign him in an emergency (the way Arsenal signed Lehmann last term), he’s no transfer option for the season. Any kid from the academy will do better than this one, I’m sure.

Always thought he was better than players like Luizao given more of a chance alongside Lucio for Brazil- I rate the guy highly

He always plays well against us. I think he’d be a great signing.
