Will we fall out of the ‘big club’ category if star duo leave?

Earlier this week, Arsene Wenger claimed that if Arsenal sell both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri this summer, then we (the fans) can no longer call ourselves a ‘big club’.

Wenger was quoted in the Daily Mirror on Monday saying:

‘Imagine the worst situation – we lose Fabregas and Nasri – you cannot convince people you are ambitious after that, even if you lose Nasri, to find the same quality player, you have to spend again the same amount of money. Because you cannot say, you lose the player and you do not replace him.’

I do kind of agree with what Wenger is saying. However, I do not see it as a permanent scenario. Say for example both players leave; I still believe we would survive as a club and have the money to replace them. So yes we may lose that ‘big club category’ that he talks about, but I don’t think for a second it would be a permanent loss.

We have lost players before and have survived, and we can do it again. What we need to do is make damn sure that this season we go out and win something and that the players that have either been brought in or promoted are the major talking points at Arsenal.

How great would it be to be sat in this situation next year to be wondering what all the fuss was about? Gervinho and Robin van Persie bag 50 goals combined and we bring home a couple of trophies. We have to stay behind the squad and the manager at all costs.

Cesc Fabregas, who was left out of the team that went to Asia because of ‘an injury to his hamstring’, has resumed full training and is looked at in a different light to Samir Nasri. Wenger said:

‘It is a question of Cesc wanting to be with us. And I think he is torn because he loves the club deeply. We will fight until the last second to keep him.’

Wenger had the following to say about the situation with Barcelona’s £27 million and £34 million bids for Fabregas, and doesn’t spare any punches this time:

‘That is disrespectful to Cesc, I rate Cesc so highly. For me, he is top, top world class, certainly in the top five midfield players in the world.’

The Frenchman closes in what I think is happening in Fabregas’ head at the moment:

‘I think Cesc has always been torn between his love for Arsenal, that I feel is really genuine, and, as well – and what you can understand -the desire to play for the biggest team in the world. I think both exist in his head. I am confident, because I hope he will see that there will be no greater achievement for him in his life than to lead this team to success and that it will not be the right period for him to leave.’

It does appear that he has different views about Nasri and Fabregas, which leads me to think that he is more willing to let Cesc go than he is Samir.

Will Arsenal fall out of the big club category if both are sold? In my opinion, yes we could do, but it purely depends on who Wenger brings in with the money recouped from both players’ potential sales this summer.

i can see the logic of the argument. We would be far worse off technically if they leave.
A big club though, ironically, could dispense with want-away stars and get dynamic in the transfer market. Wenger could,in theory, make a statement to the effect that if they dont want to play for us then leave…we will buy the best if possible to replace them. Big CHARISMATIC and bullish attitude by a manager would send out a strong message that arsenal IS a big club and no player is bigger.
The problem is more historic than the situation now. Wenger has allowed our great club to decay by not strengthening at the back in particular. This in turn has led to a trophy drought, which has its consequences in player disatisfaction. These consequencial effects of the decay have lost our image as a BIG club….(although the title BIG club is vague and is widely interpretative).
This is why its vital that wenger starts acting like a BIG club manager and not hunt for bargains when decisive action in the transfer window is absolutely imperative. We are losing the opportunities of buying cahill, samba…and others because of false economy strategies from wenger who believes that patience will force a lower price. Ive yet to see that strategy produce anything other than a missed opportunity.
If wenger doesnt buy quality players (as suggested by RVP and others), we wont be in the top4 and its forseeable that we could slip further behind on a downward slide. We are not a big club now in my opinion, i just think back to owen coyle putting a deadline on the cahill saga and wenger’s bluff being called to put up or shut up and its enough for me to know where we stand as a club….in some quarters a laughing stock!!!…thanks wenger!

We are falling out of the big time already ! We are now effectively competing with Liverpool and Spurs and etc. Trying to get into the EUFA Cup. We didn’t have to be but Wenger blew it by failing to buy last summer. And I suspect he will blow it again this summer.

It would be insane to let Nasri run down his last year of contract and lose over £20m. Wenger insults our intelligence by comparing that to buying a player for over £20m. It is different if one buys a new re saleable asset.

Fabregas will never play at his best if he does stay any longer and I sense that his injuries are getting the better of him anyway.

It would not matter too much if Wenger re invested the £55-60m in top, top replacements. But he seems to be paralysed with indecision whenever he needs to spend serious money.
