According to reports on Spanish Radio, Arsenal have shown an interest in out-of-favour Real Madrid winger Royston Drenthe.

Reports in Spain claim that there has been contact between the two clubs over the availability of the 24-year-old Dutchman this summer, after growing concerns over his future at the Bernabeu.

Drenthe, who can be just as effective at left-back as he can on the left wing, has been frozen out at the club for quite sometime now, both off and on the field.

The fans have in the past booed the Dutchman for his displays, which provoked Real to loan him out last season to Hércules, where he bagged 4 goals in 14 appearances during his spell. Now back in Madrid, it is believed that the Dutch winger will have to seek a move away from the Spanish capital after being told that he has no future at the club by Jose Mourinho.

No fee has been suggested yet. However, a bid in the region of approximately £5-6 million could be enough to seal a potential deal.

I really hope that these reports from Spain are accurate, as I am an admirer of Drenthe’s ability.

The Dutchman possesses great pace, loves to bomb forward and can deliver a deadly ball into the box from the flanks (something we can’t seem to do these day).

Drenthe, who has made 61 appearances in three years for Real, may have a bit of a temper on him, but I strongly believe Arsene Wenger could fix this minor problem and get the best out of this bright talent.

In my opinion, he could easily fill the gap left by Clichy at left-back as well as a long-term replacement for Andrey Arshavin on the wing.

A potential £5 million deal for Drenthe would be a bargain in my book. I just hope Wenger is in fact interested in him this summer.

Should Wenger make a move for Drenthe this summer?
