Thomas Vermaelen wants to become Arsenal captain one day.

The Belgian centre-back, who only made 7 appearances for the Gunners last season thanks to a niggling injury, dreams of wearing the armband like Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira once did.

The ex-Arsenal captain recently called time on his illustrious career and Vermaelen, seen by many fans as a natural leader and a potential candidate for the armband, insisted he would love to captain the Gunners one day.

The 25-year-old defender stated:

‘What Patrick Vieira did for Arsenal was amazing. Every player especially me dreams of that, to be a legend for the club.’

‘Maybe I can be the captain one day, it’s up to the boss.’

Undoubtedly, Vermaelen is a strong candidate for the post when/if Cesc Fabregas leaves the club. However, I believe it would be cruel to overlook a man who has been with the Gunners since 2004 and clearly cares for the club, I’m of course referring to Robin van Persie.

Granted, a striker isn’t always the best way to go, but RVP has stood by the club for a number of years now and should at least be given a shot at it.

If for some reason the Dutchman doesn’t want the armband, then I think Vermaelen should be given it on a long-term basis.
