Why Wenger shouldn’t publicise his summer transfer targets

Should Arsene Wenger keep his transfer targets close to his chest this summer? You better believe it, especially now that the Frenchman faces the prospect of losing two of his main summer targets to big spenders Manchester City.

The Eastland’s club, who beat the Gunners to third place on the final day of the season, are once again expected to be the transfer window’s biggest spenders as they look to build and strengthen their squad for their first Champions League campaign next season.

As a manager, Wenger has never been one to pull out large amounts of money, unlike Roberto Mancini, who is expected to be given another huge cash injection courtesy of billionaire owner Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi to spend during the summer. Of course, on the financial front, this will prove to be too big of a challenge for Wenger to compete, as City can easily out price Arsenal out of the market.

City are said to be interested in long-term Arsenal targets Gary Cahill and Gervinho, who is said to be deciding his future this week.

However, is City’s interest based on the fact that Wenger publicly expressed an interest in the players, or are City genuinely interested as well?

Bolton have made it clear they want in the region of £15-17million for Cahill, whilst Gervinho, who is thought to be a replacement for the want-away Carlos Tevez, is likely to cost around the same price. Undoubtedly, City will be prepared to pay over the limit to acquire them at all costs this summer.

Wenger recently vented his frustration over transfer matters, and believes some teams do not respect the rules:

‘We are in a job where other clubs do not respect the basic rules of any other company and we have to live with that.’

‘You cannot think that if there is not enough money to run the company then someone else [will] come in and give his money. That is not how we want to run.’

‘We have to fight [for players] against clubs which have unlimited resources.’

Well, my advice to Wenger would be, if you don’t want major competition for your signings this summer, try not to go public with them…keep them to yourself.

I see your player of the season poll. How about doing a poll on which player should leave this summer, dont restrict the list allow all 61 professionals to be included.

Are you kidding, a lunatic would be more adept than wenger in the tranfer market today. He’s just buying cheap because that’s all he can bring in, quality? fuggedaboudit. Top players take one whif of the diaper smell around the emirates and they’re off for good.

I’m not sure Wenger IS publicising his intended
buys this summer. The culprit(s) is/are the media who want to sell their wares. Can’t stop ’em I’m afraid.

Totally agree… And the fact is that Wenger’s strategy is to never publicise his intending targets. That’s how he made good buys previously and makes Arsenal a top club for formation. Maybe he’ll finally spend a lot this summer but it’s not a guarantee of success. In my view, a 10m Gervinho is far better than a 25m Benzema and Wenger knows about that; he harvested Wilshere this year and -I wish- we’re about to see Chamakh in full action next season. Best manager ever; actually quite funny to see basic football fans rebuke him for his strategies…

why would wenger say who he wants? no manager does.
plus when wenger says anything the media and blogs like this change what he says every time.
take last summer, he quiet cleary said “i will bring in at least 2 defenders”, which in media eyes ment, “wenger going buy 6strikers 9 midfielders 8 defenders and 100 goalkeepers” the media always put players, that wants a move down as wanting to join arsenal or arsenal want to sign.
arsenal have like many clubs, like to keep quiet on who they want to sign,(mainly to keep the price down),this is not a wenger policy, just like, it not wengers policy, that we build from the youth team up. this has been the arsenal way,
    since the year dot.
like nicky has said it the media who starts these stories and we can’t do nothing about it.
i prefer to listern to wenger, who said in may, “we need to strengthern the team ,and we will, but i not be buying loads off players”
that tell me he be looking to bring in players on the frindge at arsenal, and add one or two signing, but nomore then that.
what i do expect is a near on clear out of players like rosicky, eboue, denilson, alimunia, fabrigas(maybe),
and build with players that been out on loan last seson who now in thier twenties like bartley, cogquin(sorry for spelling)and sunu.

Early days, but I’m already nrevous. All our rivals have got contracts signed with new players and we’re still in the speculation market. I think it is important to get new players in early to absorb the club culture and get to know the team, surely we didn’t wait till the season finished before we started hunting. As for a club buying players just to spite us, that’s ridiculous !!

rather hard to do that seeing as a player has to jet into the country for a medical and the moment Gervinho boards a plane for London Heathrow (with no onward flight!) I guess it wont be rocket science and Mancini will make a call/send an email asking the agent to name his price.

Maybe he should sign players with a conditional clause that says they have to pass a medical; seeing as at that point its arsenal calling shots, mancini may not have a choice but to give up!

    Wenger’s Transfer Targets:

Five 12 year olds, two 14 year olds, three 17 year olds and a 19 year old… all from lesser leagues with no Premier League experience.

WENGER MUST GO!!! IF HE SPLURGES £12M ON THAT N-POWER LEAGUE 1 YOUNGSTER THEN I’LL ACTUALLY HATE HIM, ESPECIALLY WHEN AN EXTRA £3M COULD LAND US ASHLEY YOUNG!

    WENGER OUT!!!
