Is this Toffees midfielder exactly what the Gunners require?

Arsene Wenger’s search for a new midfielder this summer has stepped up a gear by pursuing Everton star Marouane Fellaini, according to a number of sources.

But, should the Gunners truly go for Fellaini this summer, or does the solution lie elsewhere?

Fellaini was recently quoted on French website, 7sur7, saying:

‘One thing is certain, I want to play in a team that wins trophies and play in the Champions League. Everton is a team of sub-top.’

Before signing for Everton in 2008 from Standard Liege for £15 million, the Belgian international was linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid, Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

The 23-year-old has been a key member of the Everton squad ever since his move, scoring 11 times in 73 appearances in all competitions.

His performances in late 2009 and early 2010 were so impressive that David Moyes labelled him ‘as good as anyone in the league’, and later re-iterated these words after Fellaini’s man of the match display against Manchester City on January 16th. In this match the tall midfielder showed off his incredible passing ability, positional sense, tackling and forward play as well.

However, the Belgian missed the rest of the 2009/2010 season through injury, as he did the end the 2010/11 season. Fellaini managed to make 25 appearances scoring 3 goals last season.

Arsenal have been linked with players like Joey Barton and Scott Parker for a midfield role at the Emirates next season. However, I believe Fellaini is a completely different player to both Englishman and am a little shocked that we have been linked with him to be honest. He is a player that I honestly didn’t think Wenger would look at; then again, he could be one of the ‘tall players’ that the Frenchman is supposedly looking to acquire this summer.

The robust Toffees midfielder possesses superior aerial ability over both Barton and Parker, loves to go forward as well as defend, is a set-piece threat, and not to mention his passing ability is second to none. If it was a choice between the three of them this summer, then I’d probably choose Fellaini all the time.

Whether he would fit in with the ‘Arsenal way’ is a different matter altogether, but to be fair, we do need a bit of variation in our line-up.

I think if we do sign Fellaini, who is reportedly rated at £15 million, then it would be a good piece of business done by Wenger. I also believe Fellaini could easily be persuaded to move to the Emirates this summer by international team-mate Thomas Vermaelen.

Here’s hoping!

I don’t think it’s gonna happen considering that wenger doesn’t want to spend

I think he’d be awesome for us, one of the few players who could push Song onto the bench. Tall, powerful, skill-full, exactly what we need. Thing is, Everton aren’t going to let him go for less than 20 million. They paid 15 and since then he’s proved his quality. I can’t see us spunking that kind of cash, despite him being, imo, the ideal player for us.

Fellaini will be a great signing and at least we would have song to compete for his postion

Yes Fellaini is what Arsenal need … though whether he fits Wenger’s requirements at less than Everton can get elsewhere …. is not yet known. He is technically good and street wise, plays deep and is big ie. seriously tall … even allowing for his hair do – which must surely be changed (?)
For Everton he is very useful both attacking and defending set pieces and Wenger seems to have found out set pieces are one of our problems.
