Why Arsenal should issue a ‘hands off’ warning to those interested in Walcott

|

If recent reports are to be believed, Italian giants Juventus and A.C Milan are in hot pursuit of young gunner Theo Walcott. Well, to be honest, I am not that surprised. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if an even bigger club were after his signature.

The 22-year-old winger has been in really good form this season for the Gunners. He has managed to bring consistency into his game, something which was clearly lacking in previous seasons. But the most obvious development that he has introduced into his game is his decision making. He no longer tries to blast the ball everytime he finds himself in front of goal. This was considered one of his biggest weaknesses, but it no longer is.

Every English fan would have been surprised to find Walcott’s name missing from the 23-man squad which travelled to the World Cup finals in South Africa last summer. Fabio Capello probably left his most explosive player out of the squad and England, as well as himself, certainly paid for it.

His abilities as an impact substitute were clearly evident during last year’s Champions League quarter-final home leg against Barcelona. Unfortunately, that was not enough for Arsenal. Walcott had to develop into a consistent first-team player. His talents were clearly evident, but the final product wasn’t there. The Englishman’s exclusion from the Three Lions squad clearly worked. It might have given him the time to have a good look at his game. It also allowed him to have a full pre-season, which clearly worked wonders for him this season.

Though he did not start regularly earlier on in the season, there were clear signs of improvement in his game. Walcott was not just running forward at full throttle every chance he got; he was using his pace judicially, with the aim of surprising opposing defenders. Walcott was also bringing his team-mates into play a lot more, and regularly moved into the striker’s role.

He needs to work on his technical ability, because it’s very bad. He also needs to work on his crossing and strength. Only then will he be considered a great player.

It’ll be all over the sports pages tomorrow – terrible news for Arsenal – Wilshire to sign for City for treble his wages deal – Nasri to Inter in swap for Diego Milito. Cesc Fabregas was asked about his future and was coy to the point of as good as saying offski. Major rebuilding needed next season.

I think he has developed into a fine player. I still think he needs to work on his crossing and some of his technical ability. Also I think he needs to strengthen up. When he does this he could be a brilliant player.

    Sell him and buy quality.

    Totally agree mate
Wasn’t Henry 22 when he joined the gunners and in that season got near enough the same amount of goals Theo got. Just saying, you never know what he might turn into our next top goalscorer?
Also don’t forget he’s missed a fair amount of games this season due to injury so a thew of his appearances were from the bench.
