Why Arsenal don’t need to break the bank on a top goalkeeper this summer

|

As failure looms over The Emirates for yet another season, Arsenal’s goalkeeping situation has once again come under some intense scrutiny.

Arsenal’s extremely unstable defence combined with a dodgy goalkeeper were literally the reasons as to why the North London club have been trophyless for the past couple of years.

But is it the case for this season’s disappointment? Honestly, the answer should be a resounding no!

This season’s disappointment is solely down to a lack of goals and firepower upfront. Yes we lost the Carling Cup final to a silly back-line error, but in general we do look a much better outfit than that in the past few seasons. This has got a lot to do with the emergence of another Arsenal youth product – Wojciech Szczesny.

The 21-year-old Pole has been a breath of fresh air to the Arsenal line-up, and a possible solution to our notorious goalkeeping problem which has haunted us for a long period. But there are still a number of fans and pundits alike who believe Arsene Wenger should break the bank on an established shot-stopper this summer.

Manchester United came up against a German shot-stopper who certainly looks the part, his name is Manuel Neuer.

The Schalke goalie put in an outstanding performance against the Red Devils in their first-leg semi-final Champions League clash, which would have surely had a number of clubs, including Arsenal, take notice of the 25-year-old. And seeing the resentment shown by a majority of Bayern Munich fans towards Neuer, one can be sure that a move to the German giants is unlikely.

Neuer is a manager’s delight. He showed last week that he is ready for the big stage, and his goalkeeping qualities need no mentioning, despite his less impressive performance last night. He is also a very good leader and is in his mid 20’s. He surely fits the bill if Wenger is indeed looking for a man between the sticks this summer.

Arsenal don’t need a goalkeeper, we already have a top keeper at Arsenal. I think our biggest weakness is our defence. If we look at some of the goals we have conceded in the last two months, they have all come from defensive mistakes.

Neuer would be a great signing, and money well spent,Czezsney will let the team down he is not ready to be No 1, maybe another couple of years. but Wenger won’t buy so wait for the accidents and they will cost us.

@stevepalmer. When has he let us down yet?

Even in the carling cup final if Kos deals with the ball its in row z, or Kos just leaves it and the keeper picks it
      up with ease!

Steve, agreed. And why when a signing is mentioned everyone says we have to ‘break the bank’? Arsenal have never ‘broken the bank’, why are we are so rich, in part because we only sell top players for millions but never buy anyone for near those amounts.

Our transfer policy has seriously angered many in the professional ranks(managers and players and fans), the ever rising ticket prices convey to the football world that we are only interested in rich ‘customers’. It’s a farce really, or should I say, just business, because the club atmosphere is long gone.

Much will depend on who leaves this summer. There are those who will be encouraged to leave and those who wish to leave. On the face of it we could lose four maybe five players in which case Wenger will be obliged to sign three, no more and a goalkeeper isn`t one of them.

There’s simply no way Wenger will break the bank to sign a replacement for such a talent. Talk as much as you like, but I think I agree with Wenger on this matter. Szczesny is top class, and we can’t blame the goalie for the lack of silverware this season.
