Should Wenger change his ways as Arsenal legends claim?

|

Former Arsenal legends Ray Parlour and Nigel Winterburn have recently called for Arsene Wenger to change his youth policy and bring in some new players this summer.

The two former Gunners gave their views on the matter in an interview following the completion of the London Legends Cup which took place yesterday afternoon. However, are they right, or should Wenger stick with what he has been doing for the last decade at Arsenal?

In my opinion, I couldn’t agree more with Parlour and Winterburn.

Arsenal are a club that should be battling for the Premier League title every season. Arsenal should be winning domestic cup honours, or at least reaching the finals of them. Arsenal should be doing a whole lot better in Europe, competing with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid. But the fact of the matter is we just won’t do it without shifting the dead weight, selling the players who just don’t care about the club, players who just play for a quick buck and then pack their bags.

Winterburn, who made over 400 appearances for Arsenal in his career, stated:

’I think Arsene Wenger will change it in the summer and will bring in some new players. It’s a massive season for Arsenal next year and a big summer ahead. I think he needs to bring some more players in and maybe let a few go. This is where the manager has to earn his money.’

I totally agree with Nigel. Wenger needs to show everyone how good a manager he really is, and that he can sign those big players, as well as use his youth policy when it’s needed.

Parlour also gave his assessment over the current situation at Arsenal. The former Gunner said:

‘In a way, when Arsene Wenger first came to the club the supporters got a bit spoiled as he continued the tradition of winning trophies, but you also have to look at what else he’s brought to the club with a new training ground and the infrastructure for a new ground.’

‘The last six years haven’t been great in terms of winning things so I think he’ll need to reassess things and bring some new players in over the summer.’

I couldn’t agree more with Ray, and believe it’s time for Wenger to listen to the fans, who pay their hard earned cash to watch their team week in week out, and go out and splash the cash made available to him this summer.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Do you agree with the Arsenal legends, or should Wenger stick to his guns?

I completely agree. But, AW must note that we want not just new players for future, but players who can contribute right away, and we want top quality player no matter how much he cost, just try to grab it and let average players like denilson, rosicky, diaby, djourou, squillaci, bentner, almunia etc……………………..
If he dont change, at least the club should change and let AW go away from the club…………

If the Loser is to stay at our club, he needs to bring in established quality players not a crop of the ‘next big things’. Otherwise, I’d prefer him not to spend anything so that when we finally get a manager with some bottle in the transfer market, he would have the funds to build a Premier League winning team.

I agree with both Nigel and Palour. Wenger needs to bring in experienced and players with real quality. He has to get rid of the deadwood and bring in better players to replace them. Let’s hope Wenger does it though.

WENGER SHOULD SIMPLY LEAVE. HE IS YESTERDAY’S COACH. HE IS HOLDING THE CLUB BACK. THE FACT THAT HE DID NOT TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO REPLACE PAT RICE SPEAKS VOLUMES ABOUT THE MAN’S INABILITY TO ADAPT.

Winning in football is a ruthless enterprise. Sometimes, it requires hard-nosed pragmatism. Mourinho and Fergie know this.

Replace a player or a coaching staff if he is not good enough. Got to get as many ruthless winners in the squad as possible.

Fans cannot keep hanging onto just hopes and potential. Look at Barca – those chaps just get the job done because they have the ability. Likewise our Invincibles of 2003/04.

I have been supporting Arsenal with all ten fingers and ten toes crossed and twisted, pulling my hair out with the lack of guts in the play. Attack and shoot the blasted ball for crying out loud! Show some desire and aggression. But no…just more tippy-tappy and puttering out.

The simple conclusion is that the Gunners just can’t do it because so many of them are not good enough. Even those who are more technically gifted have become soft. Arsene perhaps is the softie most responsible for the 6 barren years.
