Are Arsenal being priced out of the market for Mamadou Sakho?

|

Reports are circulating that Arsenal could yet again be priced out of the market for one of their top transfer targets.

Monday’s Daily Mail claims that this time Arsenal could be set to lose out in the race to sign Mamadou Sakho. There can be no question in many Arsenal fans minds that Arsene Wenger needs to invest in the defence this season.

Too many times this season Arsenal have given sloppy goals away, let leads slip and have had to produce comebacks against clubs that they should be seeing off.

Their home form that must worry Arsene Wenger. Arsenal have seemingly become a soft touch at home, maybe the size and magnificence of The Emirates Stadium have proven too much for some of his defenders? Whatever the reasons, Arsenal have to invest this summer.

The Daily Mail claims that a £20m price tag has been placed on the defender, a sum that could be too much for the notoriously tight-pursed North London club.

‘Gunners boss has long monitored the France defender while Liverpool’s Damien Camolli is also a big admirer. If Wenger fails to land the 21 year-old, he may turn to Montpellier’s Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa or Emir Spahic.’

It looks as though Arsene Wenger has a battle on for one of the most talked about defenders in Europe at the moment.

Wenger has long been an admirer of Mamadou Sakho, but is he willing to pay £20m for a 21-year-old with no real European experience? Can Arsenal fans see him stumping up £20m for a defender?

Whilst he hasn’t invested vast sums of money in players in seasons past, Arsenal’s collapse this season could be the catalyst that forces him to spend. If he doesn’t, there is little doubt that Liverpool will make a bid for the defender. The new strategy at Anfield puts them in direct competition with Arsenal for Sakho. If Liverpool are willing to invest heavily in the defender, Arsenal could yet again miss out on a potential star.

What we really need now is a LB / LWB, CB is not needed as Kyle Bartley is coming back, with TV5 has become healthy again, the rise of JD20 and the stability and solidity of LK6, why do we need another CB? Miquel can be substitute for us. I dont think we need to buy such expensive CB but let him stay on the bench. Use the money properly to buy a LB / LWB, CDM to back up Song, if Nasri really wants to leave, try to switch him + Bendtner to Lille to get Hazard + Gervinho. Then sell Almunia, Denilson, Arshavin, Diaby, Squillaci, Thomas Rosicky and Clichy. We need quality, not quantity.

I think it depends on how well Sakho plays at Left Back. Clichy is not particularly good at defending set pieces which has been Arsenals’ weakness. Sakho would be much better in that department which would help the team massively but it all depends on what other skills he possesses to make him effective at Left Back. Wenger has converted players before to be ideally suited to what was thought to be their secondary position (Thierry Henry from LW to Striker, Alex Song from CB to DM). I don’t know enough about him to be able to answer this though.

On the other hand it does give excellent options at the back. Generally you’d say Djourou is the only big presence in defense whereas Koscielny and Vermaelen are more mobile defenders suited to more agile players. By bringing Sakho into that mix you have little and large both left-footed and right-footed so you can cater your defense exactly to what the opposition threats are. Djourou and Sakho against a bruising team that like to cross the ball (Stoke), Koscielny and Vermaelen against a passing team that keep it on the ground (Barcelona) and mixtures for everything in between.
