Is Paul Davis right to suggest Wenger needs to hire a strong assistant?

|

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Davis believes Arsene Wenger must hire a strong assistant who will challenge his decisions as well as aide him in the dugout, according to talkSPORT.

The Gunners have been handed yet another Premier League lifeline after United were held to a 0-0 draw with Newcastle last night, but their still a lot of work to be done if the North London club wish to end their trophy drought.

Despite the outcome of the season, Davis, who was an intricate part of the Arsenal set-up in the late 80’s, told talkSPORT’s ‘Kick Off’ show that sacking Wenger would not help the Gunners cause. Instead, the Englishman believes a new assistant needs to be installed alongside the Frenchman in order to revitalize things at the club:

‘He’s given us some of the most fantastic football. I go there every week and watch them.’

‘Anyone that is moaning at it, I can understand the lack of winning trophies, but the style of football and the entertainment value is right up there with the best.’

‘I wouldn’t want to get rid of him or even consider that sort of stuff. He needs somebody alongside him that’s going to challenge him and ask him some questions and make him think.’

‘I’m not sure if that’s happening, where he is being challenged or questioned on the style of play.’

‘They say the best managers are the ones who know their weaknesses and bring someone in who can fill in those gaps.’

Several reports have suggested that Arsenal assistant manager, Pat Rice, is contemplating retirement at the end of the season. If these rumours prove accurate, then Davis’ claims would appear to be spot on. Evidently, we will need someone to replace Rice, but who out there is capable of doing so?

I think he does need a assistant who will question his decisions because claerly he makes wrong decisions, when it comes to personnel and subs.
