Could Arsene Wenger mould Gary Cahill into the ‘next Tony Adams’ as ex-Gunner suggests?

|

Ex-Gunner Ray Parlour believes Arsenal should sign Bolton’s Gary Cahill and mould him into the new Tony Adams, according to talkSPORT.

Arsenal’s hopes of ending their 5-year trophy drought seem to be all but over after their 2-1 loss to Owen Coyle’s Bolton yesterday afternoon, which has left Ray Parlour urging Arsene Wenger to invest in the summer.

The former England international told ‘The Alan Brazil Sport Breakfast Show’ this morning:

‘This summer is vital. I think he will buy three players and he will let a few go – people on the fringes, maybe the likes of Denilson and Bendtner.’

Parlour then told the listeners who his first signing would be if he was in Wenger’s shoes:

‘I’d buy Cahill straight away and try to mould him into Tony Adams. If Arsenal had a Tony Adams at the back now they’d win the league – no doubt about that.’

‘They’ve been very close but they need two stoppers, players who aren’t going to concede goals. We all know they’re great going forward and will score goals.’

‘I’m the biggest Wenger fan so I don’t agree with people saying getting rid of him. But now he needs a couple of big signings in the summer. If he makes those key signings Arsenal will be in with a chance again next season.’

I think many Arsenal fans will agree with Parlour, not necessarily on signing Gary Cahill, but on the summer spending.

I myself truly believe that Wenger must get rid of the deadweight. The time has come for players like Denilson and Nicklas Bendtner, as Parlour mentioned, to be sold in order to make way for new blood to come in.

I agree with Parlour when he mentions Arsenal lack a Tony Adams figure at the back. However, whether this is 25-year-old Gary Cahill is up for debate.

I dont agree with parlour Gary cahill is mediocre for me, we need somebody tall and monstrous to outmuscle strikers somebody of the samba’s ilk, gary cahiill is not of that mould. If we defend set pieces we would definitely be champions

Ray has a point and optimistically i could see cahill becoming a solid leader at arsenal.
Wenger wants footballing defenders, not dogs of war (like the old back line put together by george graham). It could be that with wenger’s influence, cahill would go a bit soft and concentrate more on his distribution and breaking forward. Its just conjecture of course…..but we need more than that…..i dont see much change until wenger leaves.

Yeessssss Arsenal surely need Gary Cahill at the back… We all saw how good he is yesterday…Johan Djourou mistake writing all over him

I agree with you, infact i’ll be over the moon if A.W can get inler and cahill i also think getting Eden plus world class striker.I heard about the Benzema rumor, but I don’t think it will happen…. he’s been in an excellent run of form with Madrid and I don’t think Mourinho will sell him.

I think Arsenal should buy Gary Cahill, we all saw how solid he was against us and even had a major assistance in the first goal. If he came to Arsenal I could see him becoming a great leader and great defender. I’m don’t think he could be the next Tony Adams as there is only one Mr Arsenal.
