Arsenal legend warns Wenger to spend cash or pay the price

|

Six trophyless seasons and counting. What is really happening at Arsenal? One of the most consistent teams in England, along with Manchester United, yet the trophy cabinet remains empty at the Emirates since 2005, whilst it is the complete opposite at Old Trafford. Where has Arsene Wenger gone wrong?

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright – a weekly columnist for The Sun newspaper – wrote earlier this week, in detail, as to why he thinks Arsenal have come up short once again and, more importantly, what they must do to stop the rot.

‘I am not saying I want the Arsenal manager to leave. Not at all. But the time has come for some serious changes or I can see them suffering the same fate at the Emirates next season.’

Therein lays one fact. Wenger should not go. He is a proven manager and the only one who can guide this club to glory. It was graceful of him to accept the responsibility for their failures this season, but the majority of the blame lies with the players who have completely let him down. You very rarely get managers who trust their players so much but it was very disappointing to see the players not putting a determined effort to win on Sunday against Bolton. Wenger’s behaviour during the match told the story. It was clear that he felt betrayed by the players whose careers he has shaped.

‘So it is clear that Wenger must spend on experienced top quality players who come in as finished products and will stand up and fight when teams get in their faces.’

Wright suggested names like Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka, Scott Parker and Roger Johnson. This is absolutely true. Most of the players in the team completely lack the mental strength that is needed to win silverware. The players who are coming out of the academy like Wojciech Szczsney, Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott have all shown encouraging signs of mental strength, but that is not the case with most in the team. The big name players have failed to stand up when required. Players like Cahill would provide that no nonsense approach to finish off matches.

Wright also says there is a lack of people within the club who question his decisions because of the lack of experience:

Arsenal need to spend right in the summer transfer window or forget about winning anything. We need a two defenders, one defensive midfielder, one attacking midfielder or winger and a striker. If we don’t get players in these positions then forget it.
