Ignasi Miquel admits he has surprised himself this season

|

Arsenal youth star Ignasi Miquel has revealed that he has surprised himself this season following his rapid introduction to the senior squad, just four months after captaining the Academy to an F.A Youth Cup victory over Darlington in late December.

The 18-year-old, who played 12 times for the reserves last year and later became captain of the side towards the end of the season, now looks set to play some part in Arsenal’s Premier League run-in due to injuries to the back-line.

Ignasi Miquel has so far recorded just 2 appearances for the senior squad this season (both in the F.A Cup), where he looked impressive on both outings. Earlier this week, the Spanish centre-back was quoted in the official Arsenal Magazine stating that he didn’t expect things to come to fruition so swiftly:

‘Things have gone so quickly, I didn’t expect to play with the first team this year.’

‘Coming back from Spain after Christmas, I didn’t anticipate anything like this. For a week-and-a-half I was training with the Under-18s and then, suddenly, I was training with the first team.’

‘There is an added pressure of joining the first team, of course, but its part of our job and you have to get used to it. Once you develop your game, pressure comes naturally. You have to deal with it. You know the pressure is there and you have to get through it.’

His step-up to the first-team would have no doubt surprised many Arsenal fans as well as himself, especially considering the fact that he was captaining the reserve side just four months ago…and being 18 years of age of course. However, judging by the two games he’s played this season, Miquel has shown signs of being a confident individual who possesses good ability in my opinion, and if he continues to develop and learn his trade in the right way, then undoubtedly more opportunities will arise for the young Spaniard in the future.

He has improved and looks a good player for the future. I wouldn’t made him starting for Arsenal as he has a lot of talent and looks good.
