The Connolly Column: Beating Barca isn’t ‘mission impossible’

|

I’d love to be able to provide a formula on how to beat Barcelona. I’m pretty confident that I’d be a very rich man if in fact I auctioned that particular equation to the highest bidder…I wonder how much it’s worth to Arsenal at this point?

I think Le Professeur is quietly confident that his team can overcome the Spanish outfit tomorrow night. Everyone’s favourite second team, a title once occupied by Arsenal, only managed a 1-1 draw at Sporting Gijon last Saturday, revealing interesting clues that could eventually lead to their downfall.

Pep Guardiola has admitted that Barcelona are not ‘invincible’, a title once held by our favourite North London side, and at least this much is true. While some hope could be taken from the weekend’s result as well as draws against Athletico Bilbao, Mallorca, FC Copenhagen, and Rubin Kazan, seventeen goals in their last five games quickly puts Arsenal’s task into perspective.

To take anything other than a thumping to the return leg in three weeks time, key players will be required to put in the best performances of their lives, and we couldn’t ask for better timing as far as our form is concerned.

Undefeated in the league since the unmentionable happened back in late November, our first-team has put together a rich vein of form (Tyneside’s freak match aside) which leaves Sir Alex Ferguson and his merry squad of lepers no choice but to acknowledge our title threat. Robin Van Persie has hit the ground running, and the rape allegations that were wrongly thrown his way back in the summer of 2005 would hold a lot more weight now if they were submitted to the police by a number of Premier League defences.

[bet_365 type=’odds’ size=’468′ af_code=’365_061443′]

Van Persie is ‘part a’ of ‘reason 1’ why AC Milan forward, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, is talking out of his ARSEnal when he says:

‘I find that Tottenham are on the same level as Arsenal.’

Really? Here are three reasons, and a very quick rundown, on how wide off the mark (pun very much intended) this unpopular Swede is…

Reason 1 – Key players. While S***s have amassed a phenomenal amount of quality central midfielders, a number that can no longer be displayed on standard scientific calculators, yet not one of them possess the ability of Cesc Fabregas. The self proclaimed ‘Jermaine Genius’ may argue that fact, but I very much doubt that anyone without a twitch would defend him. Factor in Van Persie and our representatives at last year’s World Cup Final we are looking quite good.

Reason 2 – Stadium. Bringing in over £1 million in match day revenue and seating over 60,000 fans it’s not hard to see why S***s found their failed Olympic Stadium bid a bitter pill to swallow.

Reason 3 – Management. Good ol’ ‘Arry Redknapp may be a ‘pwopa’ manager who’s experienced a recent climax of success, but his lack of League titles, Champions League experience, and unwavering ability to bankrupt every club he gets hold of (long may that trend continue) puts him way behind the recently voted World Coach of the Decade, Arsene Wenger.

And there you have it. I shan’t be drawn any further on the matter, but it’s always nice to reel a few Spuds in before trotting on their heads and drowning them in their own crap.

Arsenal are by far the best team in London, and Wednesday night will be the time we prove to the world we can be the best in Europe.

its such a f**king shame that you decided to turn this article and a sizeable chunk of it into your usual arsenal/spurs rhetoric.

Rather than concentrate on your own game you bring in the likes of ibra and his comments and then go on a tirade. What possible reason would you have don’t you have a game tomorrow to worry about but its alrite you dedicated 4 lines to that , makes the spurs bashing okay.

Arsenal are the better team in north London I cannot argue against that , The league titles and the league table currently doesnt lie but arsenal are also the mentally weakest team in london.
A point you just happen to over look while you throw sh*t at other people’s teams.

Throwing away leads on a weekly basis and then blaming all and sundry yea thats a sign of a superior team.

I have read your articles and enjoyed them and I never normally comment on such a thing but it really irks me when this f**king small club emntality that arsenal fans have adapted for the last few years while the spurs star has risen . Its not even your game. you are playing tomorrow focus on your own sh*t

    I blame Ibra tbh mate.

The Barca game will be difficult, I personally don’t think we’ll qualify over the two legs but I hope I am proven wrong.

Ibra’s comment made me laugh, Arsenal are far superior, just look at our history and where we are in the league. Ok, I admit they have improved a lot and have come a long way but to compare them to us is laughable.

Really looking forward to the game tomorrow.. Arsenal & Barcelona, two giants of the game battling it out for a place in the next round of Europe’s premier competition.. This is what football is about.

I think we have a good chance tomorrow, PROVIDING, all our players give 100% and are at the top of their game, but if any of them cant pump themselves up for a game this size then they shouldnt be playing for Arsenal football club.

Agree totally with the article, Jermaine Genius haha, didnt realise he was still playing in the premier league!

  • Thank you for another fantastic post. Where else could anybody get that kind of info in such a perfect method of writing? I’ve a presentation subsequent week, and I am at the search for such info.

  • Unquestionably believe that which you said. Your favorite justification seemed to be on the web the easiest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed while people consider worries that they just don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing without having side effect , people can take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks
