Arsenal scout impressed by Stefan de Vrij…but who is he?

|

Arsenal are contemplating a move for Feyenoord defender Stefan De Vrij after chief scout, Steve Rowley, watched the 19-year-old play against Den Haag last Sunday.

Rowley was initially sent to Holland to keep an eye on Arsenal starlet Ryo Miyaichi, who is currently on loan at Feyenoord, but was extremely impressed with De Vrij’s performance.

The Dutch youth international signed his first professional contract for Feyenoord in 2009, and has so far racked up a total of 38 appearances (21 appearances this season) and scored just the one goal for the Eredivisie outfit.

The 6’2’’ youngster is naturally a right-back, but can be deployed as an emergency centre-back if called upon. De Vrij’s current contract does not expire until 2012 and is valued by Feyenoord at around £3.5 million.

Having looked up the youngster on the net (to see his capabilities), I must say that the boy does look a good prospect for the future.

De Vrij possesses fine positional awareness and technical ability for a player so young. For such a tall defender, the Dutch youth has good balance and looks very composed when on the ball. His height and accurate distribution of the ball poses a threat to opposition defences.

The Feyenoord defender is still very young and needs to develop his attributes further. However, if Arsenal’s chief scout, Steve Rowley, suggested the youngster as a possible target for Arsene Wenger’s side, then you can expect the Frenchman to be keeping tabs on the Dutch starlet from here on in.

I don’t know too much about this player but he could be a good prospect for the future. I think personally though if Wenger were to buy players, he should buy them to strengthen the current squad and not future squads.
