Arsene Wenger has given clear indication today that he will be entering the transfer market in an attempt to bring in ‘top-class’ talent.
It was reported that Wenger will have sufficient funds available this summer, and as a result, will be able to rival bids from other clubs, if he chooses to do so.
The move from Highbury to the Emirates has driven the Frenchman to follow strict guidelines, and a policy for the past 5 years that focuses on developing talent rather than obtaining it. The loan of £133 million on the Highbury square, and the construction cost of the Emirates stadium have hindered the Gunners financially over the years. However, with the successful combination of the loan being cleared and the recent departures of Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor, means that Arsenal are now comfortably able to utilize a budget which is reported to be in the region of £35 million.
Wenger will be looking to adjust his strategy for next season and has stated he will bring in experienced players in order to challenge and possibly win the title. Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Wenger specifies what his proposed plans are in the summer transfer window:
“If we bring some players in then they have to be experienced. I think we have been in the race this year with the team we had. We will be stronger next year just with the internal improvement and with the experience these players will have.
Wenger finishes off by saying:
“The additions will be minimal but if there are some they have to be really top class.”
Marouane Chamakh has already been acquired, and Wolfsburg’s striker Edin Dzeko is believed to be on Arsene’s wish list as well. Arsene will also wait to hear from William Gallas, who is undecided whether he will sign a new contract with the gunners next season. If Gallas wishes to depart this summer, then Wenger will be expected to sign another centre-back to replace him. Le Professeur is also keen on occupying a new goalkeeper. This will not come as a surprise to the fans, after they witnessed the unveiling of the new comedy double act in Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski.
Theo Walcott has confessed that the excuse of not being ‘experienced enough’ can’t cut it anymore, and it is now time to deliver. Theo said in the Telegraph:
“We can’t use the experience as an excuse – we need to go that one step further.”
Arsenal fans will be pleased to hear the news coming out the Emirates, but isn’t it something we’ve all heard before?
Wenger has time and time again undermined his fans by refusing to listen to their pleas. So can they actually believe him this time round?
Many of the fans were unclear as to what the state of the club was in financially. They (the fans) knew they were in debt because of the new stadium and its construction costs, but many were unsure as to how much the club owed for this.
£35 million is a huge amount of money to embark into the transfer window. It can certainly attain 2-3 world class players, and Wenger is in desperate need of this.
Actions certainly speak louder than words Wenger, so the fans will be expecting to see changes next season. Wenger did imply that the additions will be ‘minimal’, so Arsenal fans, don’t expect to see massive changes straightaway. If Wenger does manage to bring in experienced talented players like he assured, then anticipate a new look Arsenal side and perhaps some silverware this season coming.
